Oil Catch Can, Eliminate that knock!

    If your OCC has the labels “OUT” and “IN”, I’d say the hose from the PCV valve should go to the IN side.

    If you were looking at the pictures of my setup, I reversed the In/Out on my OCC.

    I am using multi-layer fine mesh stainless steel to filter inside the OCC. I thought it didn't make much sense to put the smaller filter material on the output side of the OCC. I figured it would be more efficient to let the hot vapors "cool" by expanding into the OCC, then condensing on the larger output mesh screen (labeled as "IN" by the manufacturer) before exiting via the relocated PCV valve on my OCC.

    The trick is to buy a good catch can, usually in the $200 up range for an adequate size that seals well, has a sintered bronze filter and ideally has a bottom drain so you don't have to remove it to drain. If it fills and you don't catch it, you could cause engine oil leaks. Vehicles with built in separators drain back to the crankcase. Toyota did not know their rings would be so bad or might have included a separator like they have on later models.

    As an update: my car had a rear right blown wheel bearing. Paid about $350 for parts and labor. Sad, but had to be done since I was riding that bad wheel bearing for about a month. But hey I saved the car and didn’t have to buy a new one. Now it is quiet as a mouse. Even quieter since I put Dynamat on it.

    Sorry I missed the June quote below. Part of the problem is posting the issue in this very long catch can thread. I had the same right rear wheel bearing a couple of years ago. Typically they are quiet when cold for a mile or so. They are loudest around 45 to 50 mph. Road and engine noise tends to drown out worn bearings at higher speeds.

    The bearings are so good they typically don't get loose. Old school mechanics expect flexing. The noise is hard to hear by rotating the wheel on a lift, primarily because the disk brakes make their own normal sounds which is louder at slow rpms. Removing the calipers can help but the driving sound is definitive.

    It was so odd to have a bearing go out just as I installed the OCC. Thankfully my MPG now is between 48-50; I will do one last addition of Dynamat to some of the trunk areas and be done with maintenance/cleaning. Maybe I will pay someone to do a deep clean on the interior.

    I do love this car, specially since it is cheap to maintain, quiet, and I cannot find any good Prius' around for a good price. Most of them have over 150,000 miles for $10,000 and above, crazy.

    @danlatu hasn’t been active since November of 2019. If you want to mount at that location maybe DIY fab something out of gauge plate or what have you. Slotted angle worked for me.

    Back in 2019 he said the 3d bracket was a failure. By now it probably has bailed on gen3.

    holding up nicely. I put a flange bolt with a nut from Home Depot. I don’t recall the size but the head was 14mm.     It depends. CA property tax is based on purchase price and additions. It is not reevaluated yearly, meaning if the property value doubles or triples you still pay only that same amount, not double or triple...

    Not wanting to get involved with the California vs. Florida debate above, I believe this question was asked because of California SMOG laws, which do not allow any modification.

    This is why I installed mine as hidden as possible. I've yet to SMOG my car, but i doubt the tech will even look that closely. It's a little harder to get to it, but not too bad.

    Side note: This is my first post ever. I've been lurking since we bought the car last year, right before the prices absolutely skyrocketed. We also got a 2016 Honda Fit about the same time. This forum along with the links provided have been a godsend. It reminds me much of the VWvortex, which I used to be involved with when I had an Audi and a VW. Thank you everybody!

    Does increase blow by mean anything? My 2012 w/ 162k doesn’t burn oil but I just hit 1,000 miles since my last oil change and I emptied 5 oz of oil (half full) out of my can already. Some people here only have it half full after 5k miles.

    That’s a lot; maybe something going on there. In 2~3 thousand kms I’ll get around 60 cc (couple of oz) at most. Letting it settle/stratify, is it mostly oil? Mix of oil/water, what ratio?
