This is my 2nd Prius Prime. I got an offer about 4 months ago that I couldn't turn down. Got the new one for less than I sold the old one. I bought the first one in buffalo as well. I am based out of Chicago. No where in the midwest sells the Rav4 Prime or Prius Prime. If you do find one, they're rare and you can see mark ups of $10-25k. Basil Toyota (Lockport, NY) is where I bought my first one but now they are tacking on a $500 mark up on the Prius Prime. I was surprised they wouldn't knock that off for a return customer who has referred several others to them.

So I am number 2 on waitlist for xle at local dealership (with a 500 deposit down). Toyota has once again announced they are cutting production in August. I'm desperate to get the car before the 4500 tax credit ends at the end of September. I'm in CT and my dealership got only one allocation in June and just got one in early July. I started looking around and a dealership a half hour away does not have a wait list and is "due" for an allocation this month. Do I jump? Has anyone tried to pry a 500 deposit out of the hands of a dealership?
    Thanks.

I had a similar story with our 2021 Prius Prime XLE - purchased it in Maryland in Dec '20, paid something in the neighborhood of $27k(Maryland had some incentive at the time that our dealer out in Michigan did not) - and my Toyota dealer near me played the "ohh well Maryland may offer $2500-3000 off, but they will gouge you somewhere else... a $120 plane ticket to Owen Mills Maryland and the dealer salesperson picked me up and drove it back to Michigan later, I sent my "old" salesperson in Lansing a nice picture of the car with our financing paperwork - no words since from them..... :)

With that said, last winter my wife and I were trying to find another Prius Prime to take advantage of the federal tax credit. We did find one in California, paid something like $32k and now own a Black 2022 XLE(paperwork was a HOT mess, even threatened to have to sue the dealership because once we left they reran my credit and charged me for some ceramic protections that could not be applied since I had the car shipped back to Lansing - took 6 weeks to correct...). We ended up selling the 2021 to a dealer in Ohio for $29.5k - their offer was more than what I paid AND we put 30k miles on the car.... We also did get a tax credit on top of it. That one was win/win!

With all of that said - has anyone had luck finding any Prius Primes lately? Every dealer I spoke to is in waiting mode - allocations are way down or just have no ETA for fulfillment. Some quote me 3-6 months....
I had one dealer(I won't give specifics but just say they were in California as well - I'm not having great experiences with CA... ) take a $500 deposit only to sell the Prius Prime I thought I was getting... I even thought about moving away from my 2016 Prius 3 Touring to a Prime or a BZ4X(but not for the markups I've been seeing) and let my wife keep her 2022 Prime since they are really keeping their value well.

I am from Michigan and had to have my father in law purchase my 2022 Prime in Connecticut. We got it for MSRP minus CT and Federal Rebates. The dealership in Michigan gave me back my $500 deposit with no questions asked. We do not have to pay MI taxes on the title transfer because it is my father-in-law. I pick it up in 2 weeks.:)

Ok: I guess I will have to expand my order/allocation for my new Prime.

For those who getting a car out-of-state, the dealer will provide the paperwork so you can pay for your own state tax when you register ( say CA) ? correct ?

I can pickup my Prime within couple of week, pending logistic.

It depends on the dealer and the state. I bought in MD and live in IL. My dealer gave me MD temp plates and said they were doing the IL registration. I did pay IL registration fees when buying, not MD. Apparently, they used a service to do the paperwork, but (according the the dealer) the service dropped the ball, and it took so long (~4 mos) that I was fined by IL for registering too late after the sales date. They claim they are now using a new service to do this.

I've heard of others who did the paperwork themselves. I've also think I've read further up this thread that CA makes you register in CA, then transfer the plates so it isore difficult to buy out of state.

I'd not make any assumptions and make sure to ask these questions when buying.

Thanks Duke - I did bit of reading, the Fed credit will be down to 3750 or less on my case... For CA, the most important is the emission sticker on the driver side, it have to say CA (50 states emission) .
The sale tax from what I understand: some dealers in certain area will collect and send the tax to CA on my behalf , some will let me do the paperwork myself (if there are not require to do so ). I would definitely avoid to let them do it to save the trouble you getting ! :(

I hope some CA buyers have experience, otherwise, I will let ya all know when I get my CA plate.

Toyota dealer offering $27,500 for my 2020 Prime LE w/ 42k miles. One minor repair to rear fender when scraped by some car but went thru insurance bc it was a lot more than the deductible so it comes up on the Carfax as a “Minor Issue”.

It is also Blue Magnetism which I believe are easier to sell because they stand out on the lot. Paid $28,998 brand new in March 2020 w/ a few options (body side moldings - $209.00) (all weather floor mats and cargo tray - $259.00) as listed on the window sticker - but with remote start installed for free at my insistence.

Also the PA $500 rebate and the tax credit. Not sure what to do. I can’t do another winter with this as my daily driver. It gets stuck so easily. Sure I could get winter tires but it’s still FWD with a heavy battery in the rear. But I love that it doesn’t cost me $40 to drive 2 hours away like my 2019 WRX did (which I traded in for the Prime) - and that was when fuel prices were around half what they are now. $5 a gallon for a Subaru WRX that gets 18mpg city and 26-27mpg **if you stay out of boost territory** would be costing a ridiculous amount where some of my work wouldn’t even be worth it to do as half would go to fuel.

Anyone else thinking about this stuff?

The dealer wants to order me a Rav4 Hybrid SE - 40mpg or so - not bad but it is AWD so I won’t be afraid of an inch of snow.

Just picked up my new Prius Prime. In my area most dealerships are charging over msrp by thousands. Paying anywhere from 3 to 7 thousand extra wasn't in the books for me. I did some research and found dealers in 3 states that weren't adding that extra charge. Some only sold in their area (a certain set of zip codes in their state) For the first time in my live I did pay msrp, and I was happy to do so. I did miss out on the NY state incentive because I purchased my car in CT. Like many others I had to put. 500 down to reserve the vehicle, I was told upfront how long it would take to get the vehicle I was asked my color preferences and was allowed to select different 2 trim packages {xle and limited}. The dealerships estimate on delivery was accurate.
The only advice that I could give anyone is not to give up on the car you really want It took me two months to find a reputable dealership , they are out there determination and patience is what you need.

I have no trouble in 8” fresh snow or drifts with a 2” lift and winter tires on my PP. just need to be cautious on icy corners with the heavy rear end. We had record snow fall this last winter with poor/slow snow clearing and did not get stuck at all.

Which dealer did you use in CT? We are debating if we want to put down a deposit on a future delivery. Our Gen2 is still going strong at 160,000 miles, but it would be nice to have a newer model with the electric range option.
