Best way to increase MPG (not including driving habits)

    I actually found that my tires lasted longer (70k) on my first set when I had them at 45. My 2nd set only lasted 60k miles at 40. Could it have been any number of factors? Sure. :D

    Oh wow oldie but goodies question.
    Back in the day, there was a fellow Wayne Gerdes who was the champion of the high pressure.
    He could probably answer that if he is still around.

    Obviously it is convenient to stick with the same revolutions so the speedometer works. And then I think Wayne would still fill that tire up to 50.

    Tires have multiple layers of steel belts to keep the surface that grips the road flat... The archaic notion that too much air pressure will bend these belts and surface will no longer be flat and cause uneven tread wear is entirely false.

    NOPE. Not if it is true economy you are looking for.
    The price difference between E10 regular and E0 (usually) premium, often MORE than makes up for the 3% or less gain in fuel mileage.

    Not entirely.

    Within reason, maybe, but not if you are talking about the difference between a recommended 30 and an actual 50......which might go up to 60 or more when HOT.

    And your broad generalization that all tire designs work exactly the same way is equally (or more) archaic.

    If I put a resistor inline the gen3 narrowband upstream sensor of a Prius would it trick the car to run lean or rich

    It likely would "trick" it to run BAD or not at all.
    Forget it.

    I find if I don't run my AC in auto mode I get about 5 mpg better

    ...except i work at the local Toyota dealership here and we put like 6k+ tires so storage every spring and fall and i can tell that those overinflated tires wears in the middle and those underinflated ones wears on their shoulders. People that wears the outside of the tires (like i do..) tends to drive their cars like they just stole it... tires wears like a jigsaw blade when alignment is bad and wears in patches when dampers are shot and the car plays basketball with their tires. (Yaris...) mostly this.. Bad inflation pressures is number 1 cause of worn tires, bad alignment is second..

    And FYI, you dont have layers of steel in a tire.. you have layers of steel mesh.. not the same thing at all...

    I've run two sets of ecopias EP422 in the 45psi range for more than 60K miles and I'm the opposite of someone who drives the car likes the car is stolen, as in I drive real slow and my tire wear at the end of the tire's lifespan is consistently more worn on the edges than in the center. So I disagree with what you're saying...

    How many cars come in at 45psi at your Toyota Stealership?

    Edge wear on tires, at least inner edge wear, is typically due to rear camber?

    I'd say, maintain it well.
    I clean your battery cooling fan.
    Run clean, air filters ie replace as required.
    Clean your MAF sensor and throttle body as required.
    Keep the EGR cleaned as required.

    If your battery tabs are going nasty and corroded it might help to replace them with nickel plated copper bus bars.

    Other than that, like the others said get good LRR tires and inflate accordingly.

    It's just insanely inconsistent. Normally, winters are mild with snow for a month and then we get a deep freeze for a couple of months, but this one has been 3 days of deep freeze, 1 of blizzard, and then repeat.

    fortunately, it's reasonably consistent here. cold winters, hot summers, decent spring and fall. that's when i get my best

    Inner edge tire wear is from turning the steering wheel all the way to the end stop in parking lots. The tire on the inside of the turn turns more when you're nearing the end stop

    It's a fact that you can change the tire wear from center to outward via tire pressure. Steel is flexible and air is powerful.
    You definitely can bust the belt through over inflation also. I usually air my tires up at 50 psi when hot. On my volt i
    can see real time PSI and that's an awesome feature.. i've ruined tires in the past through over inflation. One was a blow out and another i busted the belt inside. A guy did a calculation in this thread showing when gas was $2.50 it saved about $250 running higher pressures..
    I have to wonder though what he spent on repairs to suspension/bearings during that time. Gas hitting $5 a gallon i guess you save $500.
