Swapping in a Gen 4 Prius' 2ZR Engine into the Prius v

    drove around for 50 miles yesterday with tech stream running. Fans kick on 203 and goes to 205-208 for few seconds then drops back to 199 F

    both codes are gone. P3190 and P148F

    I swapped the new throttle body that came with the new engine to old one then bleed the coolant system by pressing the radiator hose by thermostat and loosening the temp sensor up to to let air out.

    I think if the ECM wants the pump to do 3650 RPM and the pump is doing zero RPM, it doesn't even matter whether the impeller has separated. :)

    I think burping it fixed your issue. I used the gen 4 throttle body on both swaps I did because lower miles.

    yes that is what i am thinking too. I think the main problem with raised tank was there was extra coolant that block the return hose on the tank

    also was getting p3190 which led me to believe i might have a faulty throttle body. So i cleaned my old one and installed it.

    Do you think swapping it back to the one that came with new engine introduce air in system?

    Probably because of the Toyota version of the fit valve whatever they call it.

    in the books… Drove to California the day after finish install at Mark’s shop in Beltsville, MD. No issues. 160,000 car with 35,000 engine.

    Someone should produce a summary, parts requirements, and a series of work cards for this mod, which sounds like the way to go when an engine replacement is needed. Thanks for the play-by-play.

    Its pretty much already here on the forums. The engines are externally the same just swap it in and use the gen 3 intake and exhaust and extend 1 sensor for easiest plug and play.

    Just watching the videos over and over helps. I'd say for anyone thinking to take on a summary, a marathon viewing session would be mandatory; there's lots of little details. I get a kick out his "asides" too; lots of funny insights.

    P148F is back. I am lost at what to check other than bleeding the system in maintenance mode and cracking open the temp sensor.

    my last option is to drain the coolant and cutting the jiggle pin off on thermostat

    As I understand it from this post, that code was added for the 2011 model year. At the moment, my TIS subscription isn't paid up, and the only downloaded repair manual bits I have are from 2010, so I haven't got the details of that code.

    However, I don't believe it is triggered by any of the things you're talking about checking for it. So I think you'll probably get further faster by looking up what does trigger it (its "detection condition") in a repair manual of the proper vintage, and following the troubleshooting steps found there.

    Where can I find your gen4/gen3 swap write up?

    just did the head gasket and water pump on my 2012 V with 206k on it and less then 500miles later it developed a slight oil leak:(

    We have a 2012 Prius v wagon with 178K on it now...and like clockwork it has developed a head gasket leak.

    Here is what I did...I don't recommend it to everyone and I'm trying it as an experiment and am updating the thread below every now and then. So far it is holding up well...but it is not a long term solution by any means.

    It'll buy you some time just buy you a JDM spec engine gen4 or 3 whatever your poison. You'll get 150K plus out of that so you know that that's a decent that shouldn't cost you much it should be able to get out of that for around 18 19 if you good.

    Yeah, doesn't take much. The screws are really not outrageously stubborn, just need to be surprised a tiny bit, then they spin right out. Light taps on a hand impact driver, or something like a Lisle or Thexton seized-fastener removal tool with a very light feathery touch on the air hammer trigger.

    OK ~ I'm looking for a head check, verification/validation that I grasp the basic yet crucial details of the Gen 4 swap.?,?

    Gen 4 engine (A/B)
    Gen 4 plugs & coil packs
    Gen 4 water pump
    Gen 4 t-stat ~ jiggle pin up/12 o'clock ~ don't lose that coolant flow restrictor
    Gen 3 intake manifold
    Gen 3 wiring harness
    Gen 3 exhaust
    Gen 3 EGR system
    Gen 3 flywheel and damper
    Gen 3 dipstick
    Gen 3 engine mount
    Gen 3 or Gen 4 oil filter housing


    8x1inch galvanized pipe
    Pex 3 way splitter
    EGR sensor extension ~ either purchase one or splice while engine is out
    Grind off nub by EGR cooler while engine is out

    2 ground wires relocated
    Gen 4 also has an oil level sensor that will not get plugged in ????


    Flywheel Bolts: Use Red loctite, 36ft.lbs. + 90 degrees (14mm 12 point socket)
    Damper Bolts: 22ft.lbs.
    Motor Mount Bolts: 45ft.lbs.
    Engine to Transmission Bolts: 24ft.lbs.
    Make sure that the dowel/alignment pins for the engine and transmission aren't doubled up
