I recently took my car to the dealer as it is under warranty, 25000 miles on it...

(I used to be a Toyota tech a while ago)

after a cold soak, the gas engine starts, but its very shaky, almost like a miss-fire. And at about 10-20mph when you go to accelerate lightly, to make the gas engine start, it starts vibrating again. but if you give it more gas, it smoothens out. Still sounds like a misfire to me...

    But, there are no codes.

The dealer replaced all 4 injectors, performed a throttle body service, and an EFI Service, includes, fuel system cleaning, tank additive.

they told me the injectors for #1 and # 2 where not performing correctly and that they needed to be replaced. after opening a case with the infamous TAS (Toyota tech support)..

so, I got the car back Saturday afternoon, left for about 20 minutes, and it started doing the concern all over again.

so here I am again, another fine engineering job by Toyota. and Im without a car Wth...

anybody else having any problems similar?

ok, update on my car... was told that there was a mix up with the part numbers and that parts supplied the wrong injectors to the tech that installed them.

oh and the correct injectors are on back order with no ETA as of now. FML.

I have the problem on my 2014 C. I am told it may be
A known defect of the intake manifold. If it is, what a piece of crap.

I'm experiencing something similar. Every time my engine transitions from EV to ICE, it's not very smooth. Even at high speeds when, technically, the EV mode shouldn't even kick in, there's a threshold in acceleration where there is a jolt. Is this the same problem everyone else is experiencing? My 2014 C3 is only a few months old with 2700 miles or so on it.

I m also experiencing a similar issue. There is kind of a rattling sound in low speeds in power transition at some threshold. Local toyota dealer did an engine tune up and the problem is still there. No issue in EV mode and higher speeds. There's a threshold in acceleration where there is a jolt. I also feel that it is coming from CVT. Can it be an issue with CVT in low speeds ?. I have 2012 aqua and done 14000KM on it. Please comment and help.

My 2012 C, model one, with 37,000 miles runs flawless, not one rattle from the motor or interior, I allow my car to warm up to 100 degrees and or ICE shut down before I drive it. I change the oil every 5,000 miles and only use top tier premium gas. I have change my trans fluid at 35,000 miles. The most important thing to do is to always allow the engine to shut down at least once before turning it off. This will eliminate any start up issues.

Question #1: Ask yourself if these funny noises, jolts, vibrations, and "transitional difficulties" are actually indicators of problems...or are they simply feelings and noises that you are not used to.

My engine starts up occasionally a bit rough, but it evens out in a few seconds. This is a rare occurance. It doesn't worry me.

I feel thunks and clunks as the engine drops out, the car changes to EV, and then back to engine power. The C isn't a Cadillac, you are going to feel the changeovers. It doesn't worry me.

Prii are not a normal vehicle, and there are things it does that will be new to you. Be patient...be observant.

I'm not sure, but the Prius C could have an active engine mount - this type of engine mount has a motor or servo in it that counteracts engine vibration.

Another thing I noticed - if the car has TOO MUCH oil in it, then it runs weird and crappy - the crank counterweights are whacking the oil. Check the oil level - it doesn't take 5 quarts - it takes less.

I have another thought besides ECU or injector problem.
If the crankshaft belt takeup pulley is a bit tight it might take a mile or two to get full take up as the engine shutdown could let the pully collapse a bit and let the belt run loose with attendent hestation and vbration..

Amen to that. and it costs you mpg too.

The wife got tired of the "clunkyness" in the C (Aqua), so I bought her a Lexus NX300h F-Sport. That is a very ironed-out HSD, but cost three times what the C did...

I have intermittent vibrations along with rumble which seem to manifest themselves between acceleration and deceleration. Took it to the Toyota mechanic at my dealer who dies hybrids and he experienced the above with me driving. Vibration in steering wheel and seat synchronized to rumble. The mechanic did not have any factory alerts for this problem. However he said that it just might be an engine mounting. Keeping an eye on it. Not happy with this problem.

I am having the same very issue, 57000 km on my car, its an aqua 2012. Whenever its on low speeds, for example, I am accelerating out of a traffic signal, i would hear this misfire type of sound like if the engine is struggling. If you have got your issue resolved please let me know so that i can do the same.

Similar problem as car starts accelerating. The mechanic is getting focused on transmission transition from electric to gas. Any other thoughts, results, solutions?

Howdy, and sorry for necroing an old thread.

I've got Yaris Hybrid that shares the same engine (1nz-fxe) and tranny with a Prius C. I've got the exact same problem and i'm trying to hunt down the culprit.
Did anyone ever end up solving this?
I've had the car for two weeks and its done 50k km (31k miles)

So far I've cleaned TB, PCV-valve, New airfilter and oil.

    Still to do:
EGR system clean (not usually clogged on this engine)
Intake manifold clean and new gasket
    Spark plugs
    Check coils
    Gearbox fluid

    Not losing coolant.

    Situation update:

    Changed spark plugs.
    Cleaned MAF and MAP.
    Changed Tranny oil.
Cleaned the EGR pipe. Inside was even light coating of carbon. Took a look inside the EGR. Valve stem looked fairly clean.
Weird thing is, after I did this and soaked the o-ring that connects the pipe to the intake manifold in silicon spray, the car started running better. There's still a slight shudder at low rpm's but it's miles better now.

I'll take the intake manifold off, clean it and install a new gasket. Might as well clean EGR as well. Hopefully these last two operations will rid the car of the remaining shudder completely.
