I love my Prius which I bought certified pre owned from a dealership about a year ago. Unfortunately it has an occasional charging issue, which is maybe either a software issue or a hybrid battery issue but I'm not sure. Typically, when charging it takes the normal amount of electricity and drives the advertised 25 miles or so on a full charge. However sometimes, about halfway through charging it will suddenly stop charging at about 2.5 - 3 kWh , say that it's full battery when I start it, but then will only drive about 10 miles on a "full" battery. This only happens about 1 out of maybe 20 times when I charge, I took it to a dealership and they said without a check engine light or being able to replicate the problem on site, they can't diagnose it. Anybody ever have a similar issue? I'd love to try and figure out what it is while my hybrid battery is still under factory warranty. Thanks in advance

I'm kind of surprised no has responded before this. That might be because none of us has ever had this happen or heard of it.

Could there be a charging schedule that's getting in the way of a full charge? Even so, I can't see it showing 100% SOC on the display if the battery is not charged to it's limit.

    Welcome!
Check the time and date settings of your on-board ECU. Then erase all scheduled charging data - then reenter your schedule. Enter just a weekday or weekend schedule and see how it works for a week. Build up from there to isolate the issue; if there is one. If you've got overlapping schedules - that will easily confuse the charging computer.

I had something similar happen to me - not getting a full charge once in a while. Once I figured out this pattern repeated on a weekly basis - I was able to troubleshoot the problem to someone at the dealership setting the wrong date on my car. This threw off my charging schedule off by a day - weekday vs weekend charging schedule.

    Hope this helps...

PS; CARB law in Ca gets you an 8-year or 100K-mile warranty on that traction battery. If you purchased a 2020 or new car, the traction battery warranty is 10-years or 150K-miles.

really? my 2012 came with 10/150. unfortunately, you need a failure code to get a new battery

Actually, CARB states have had the 10-year/150k warranty right along while the rest of us had 8/100. In 2020, Toyota made 10//150 nation wide.

the only time i have seen weird charging behavior, it wasn't exactly like yours but it was reading the wrong charge percentage, was when my 12v battery was dying. that may be something to consider changing, especially since yours was pre-owned, it lived through pandemic lockdowns, and Prii have notoriously weak 12v batteries.
