I'm hoping a fellow Gen 2 owner can help - I'm 2000 miles from home. On my drive out here I started to hear a "creaky" noise when accelerating hard from a full stop. Once I'm up to speed or if I accelerate slowly there's no noise. Today I was able to jack the car up and have a look underneath. I don't see anything obvious, but as I was poking around I found this piece. It's 1-5/8" in circumference and about 1-1/2" high. It looks like half of a suspension part of some kind that broke at a weld on the top shown in the first photo. It is metal outside and inside with rubber in the middle. I found it laying loose right on top of the hole in the bracket of the third photo. I can't see where it came from. I'm going to jack up the car further to get a better perspective, and will look at some exploded diagrams. Meanwhile I'm hoping that a PriusChatter will recognize the part and point me in the right direction. Mamn thanks to anyone who could have a look and provide any guidance.
It's part of the lower motor mount. Couldn't tell you exactly what it does, probably a resonance damper like dolj said. I've seen a few break off and wedge themselves between the motor mount and the engine which will result in some weird creaking and clunking noises. The car is perfectly safe to drive without it but at some point you might want to get it replaced.
Thank you both so much - you are lifesavers! I wasn't looking forward to a 2000 mile drive home worrying all the way that I was going to have a breakdown. I spent hours today looking at the motor and tranny mounts and couldn't see anything missing. That piece is on the top side so I wasn't able to do anything but feel the area with my finger and it wasn't obvious. Your diagrams and photo make it crystal clear, and that spot you describe is exactly where it was sitting. I literally cannot thank you enough.
Thanks again, @dolj and @Texas Hybrid Batteries! I arrived home without incident and just a little clunking. It was so much less stressful with your spot-on input and knowledge sharing. Now it's fixing time. My question is - is part #4 - 12305-21190 Insulator Mount Sub Assembly a one-piece replacement or can I source just the tuned damper piece (the cylinder). It looks like it bolts into the insulator assembly. And I'm guessing the damper cylinder broke at a weld as it looks like I have a half of it, broken at a weld (first photo is mine and second photo is a parts photo). Would you also replace the #1 - 1236A Center Rod while I'm in there? Are used parts eBay or otherwise OK (with due diligence) or would you only use new? I'm hoping to keep my 2006 for a while. Cheers, Andy
You need #3 1231321010 or 1231321030, not sure which side. Toyota Prius NHW20 1NZ-FXE Engine Mount Bracket 1231321010 1231321030 looks to be driver side 2004-2009 TOYOTA PRIUS Engine Support Mount ROD Bracket Left Driver Side | eBay
Thanks @alftoy, those are much better photos than I had. It looks like my piece isn't bolted but welded to the bracket, amd that is where it broke. I'll drill down on the part numbers and figure out which whole bracket to buy.
There is only one engine support mount with rubber snubber 1231321010 is actually part #2 1231321030 is the correct part shown as #3
Thanks again @alftoy. I'm thinking of buying both parts new as they are wear parts and I don't want to cheap out and end up with another replacement down the road. Particularly the mount with the tuned damper on it as it looks like that part tends to break off at the weld, and I imagine used pieces may be on the way to a similar fate. I found these at https://parts.longotoyota.com/ using my VIN to match: Insulator, Product ID: 12305-21190, $206.78 Center Rod, Product ID: 12363-21030, $84.34 Do you folks have any favorite sites to buy new parts reliably?
Patrick Wong, a longtime poster here, used to suggest Camelback Toyota in Arizona. Don't know if he still does. I always did well enough locally. But, I am not afraid to barter for a discount. https://parts.camelbacktoyota.com/oem-parts/toyota-insulator-1230521190
The Camelback prices are really reasonable. Olathe Toyota is also quite competitive (usually), but in this case, with both parts combined, it works out a few dollars more expensive. Insulator - Toyota (12305-21190) .... Sale Price: $204.12 Center Rod - Toyota (12363-21030) Sale Price: $ 92.03 Just thought I'd mention it as another option for the future. I guess the moral of the story is it does pay to shop around.
Thanks for the help, all! The dealer associated sites were about the same after factoring in shipping. I ended up buying from a local dealer through the official Toyota parts site with their free shipping promo - it was about $2 cheaper. I considered RockAuto and the various aftermarket options which were about half the cost but opted for the safer official parts. Looking forward to losing the clunks! PriusChat is a great community thanks to folks like you.
