folks, thanks for clarifying- my secondary goal was to reach others who may be in similar situations and in need of a set of tires. although i'm likely preaching to the choir, it's great to see that we're not searching for three tires and rather, getting a whole new (not used) set. Tekken, thank you for following up on the mpg differences. IMO, $240 installed is a great price, and worth a 1-2 mpg demerit unless there are other faults. Have you noticed any change in road noise or difference in handling w the new set? btw, are we talking the Kumho solus model? that might allow others to search for this thread when shopping around. I have learned from many threads here after the fact, such as quickly making copies and not letting our household get down to just one key fob after the other one mysteriously disappears. Given the whirlwind of headlines these days, it's possible (though unlikely) that news emerges on kumho tires like the firestone fiasco a couple decades ago, further limiting our choices.
Kwyjibo: As for now, this set of 4 Kumho tires is running good. I have drove up to 90 MPH this morning with window down and road noise is minimal compare to my previous tires Lion Heart. I believe, putting couple thousands more miles on this set of New Kumbo tires, it will get my 56 MPG back.
I once had those Lionhart tires on my Gen 4 Prius and they blew out on me before I reached 500 miles. I thought they were a good deal at $40 a tire and reviews were generally good. Bad decision. Fortunately Walmart allowed me to return them as a manufacturer defect and they replaced it with Goodyear-made Douglas tires. I haven’t had any problems since.
Sorry to revive a dead thread, but I just installed 4 of the KU27’s on a 2014 and my mileage has been really crappy; under 40 crappy, when previously I could easily get above 50 even on nearly bald tires. Alignment is tomorrow so hopefully that will fix it, but could the tires be the culprit on it? I was expecting a 1-2mpg decrease like was mentioned here, but that is a sample of 1.
Are the pressures correct? And have you done a speedo correction check (use the GPS on your phone), as you could actually be travelling a slightly different difference (and have a speedo change to adjust to).
Negative for both, but TPMS is working and miles aren’t super far off if they are. Now, alignment came back that it was really off; fixed now, and Walmart put 2 tires on backwards since there’s a marker for outside but not inside on the KU27’s I received, so if any of y’all get em, take note. I’ll keep y’all up to date on the MPG as they wear in.
How worn were your last tires? If you really wore them down, then their inertial drag was much lower due to less rotational mass. You may have been used to inflated numbers due to neglect of tires.
So we're over 3000 miles into these tires and I'm a bit meh... MPG is lower than it was, but I'm not sure if there are other factors at play than just the tires. My wife still averages over 40, and I can get over 43 in her car, which is a few MPG less than we both could easily pull a couple months ago. We'll see how they set in once they really start to wear in a few months.
I got some of my best MPG numbers on my very worn out toyo tires, as well as other cars toward the tires being end of life. Driving in the rain however was a white knuckle experience, even at just 45 to 50 MPH with the Prius. You should not be getting in the 40's with the car unless youre driving very quick on the interstate or having a lead foot. I lost about 5 MPG when putting on the Michelin Defenders but after the break in period it went down to 2-3 MPG loss.
