So my 2010 Prius III blew a hole in the engine last night...

I say clogged EGR cooler and I hope you all did clean it before installing new engine.

 

@danlatu had a hydrolocked piston on the engine he rebuilt. Initial issue was just blown head gasket I believe. When he had the head off he noticed one piston maybe 1/8" low at Top Dead Centre. The rod on that piston was bent IIRC.

So this same thing happened to me. It was more sudden, no smoking, no evidence of low oil, no drinking coolant… but alas after hard shaking on the highway, loss of power and a bunch of hazard lights I have the same hole in my engine.

I want to do the engine swap you did. How do you guys recommend I go about finding an independent Toyota mechanic to do the swap? I saw a price in this thread for ~$350. That seems like a steal to me. Any advice on how to find a similar deal locally? I live in Costa Mesa, CA 92626.

Given you are in So Cal, I'd recommend contacting @RightOnTime and getting the swap done there.

He's done this activity a time or two.

Haven't been on here in a while since I got the C-Max Energi and sold the '10 Prius. Next trade, I'll definitely go back to the Prius, so many things I like about it and so much easier maintenance. I'd like to know if the Gen 4 has the same oil consumption as the Gen 3 and also did they fix the EGR cooler issues. I won't be trading before late fall or early next spring so I have some looking around time left and it will be good to get back here.

there is an issue with coolant leaking in the exhaust heat recovery system, but Toyo seems to be acknowledging and fixing it.

Here is a prime example of this…..

Had a customer come in with a blown Engine with this same issue

 

If these engines failed because of high RPM or full throttle operation then all of my engines would have blown up a long time ago. My prius engines run at red line all day long and I do not have premature failures

 

What mileage do these engines have? Why do you run @ redline?

I'm curious because I like to do pulse and glide in the city.
