I’ve been reading and trying to make sense of the 2016 spare tire mod thread. I’m not sure what all has changed since that thread was made to now. I have a 2022 eco and would like to get a full size spare or at least a “donut” spare. Can anyone simplify what I’d need to make that happen, including Toyota part numbers, for the correct foam piece, bolt/clamp for the tire, etc? I’d really appreciate it. I have a long daily commute and this will also be my road trip car for my wife and I, and I’d feel better having the option to keep a secure spare underneath the cargo area.
Forgot to add, part of my need for a “modification for dummies” is timing. I’m only a few weeks away from a 13 hour road trip and I’d like to have it set up by then. Thanks in advance. This place is full of knowledge.
What does the space well look like in your 2022 Eco? Have any pics of it? all the part #s is a pretty big request, specially if they're not listed in the 2016 spare tire thread you've been reading. And since there are no direct fit part #'s for your model. Good new is that I think a spare should fit in the spare well. Why don't you pull a wheel off the car and see if it looks like it fits in the well, for starters. A few pics of the well and or wheel in the well should help get you more info.
I know these things aren't bulletproof, and it doesn't answer your question, but I have to say that I've had many tire issues in my 2017 Prius with no spare. More often than not, I believe tire issues are slow leaks that don't get addressed quickly enough. For me, the TPMS always turns on as an early warning and I've always been able to get to a gas station to top off the air on the effected tire until I'm able to get somewhere to get the tire patched or replaced, sometimes days later and after multiple air top-offs. I have over 200,000 miles on my 2017 and regularly take 1000+ mile road trips and have 600+ mile days. Just trying to give you some peace of mind as you head out on your trip.
Yep, I have the 15-inch wheels and ended up buying the wheel from McGeorge Toyota on-line and ordered a tire from my dealer. Current spare tire is running $76.37 with them (I think I paid around $90 for the tire from my dealer) Discount Tire mounted it for me. Spare Wheel - Toyota (42611-47631) I also replaced the scissor jack in the car with this one...way better!
Fun enough I actually looked in my car and there was a “donut” type spare. It’s not a full size like I want, but will work for now. I’m happy about it though because I was under the impression the eco didn’t have one. There is no foam at all and it very much looks like someone just threw a random spare in there without any type of fastener to hold it in. I guess it works for now though. I have not heard any rattling or anything. I would like to get the foam insert or whatever part I need though because the floor of the cargo area isn’t supported by anything other than the tire at this point, so anything heavy would not work out well.
@MScelery do you have the handles for the scissor jack? I don't see them in your pic and in the prime they are packaged with the lug wrench is a plastic pouch. channeling my Capt. Obvious here, it doesn't do much good having a spare if you can't get the tire off the ground. @ColoradoBoo What do you like better about the amazon scissor jack compared to the OEM?
