Nothing quite as thrilling as a new head unit, and I did it yesterday rather than today. I rotated the tires checked the brake pads, and loosened up the brake caliper slide pins by sliding and spinning them to redistribute the grease. 62k+ miles and about 7mm left on the pads.
Oooh, I like this setup. Can you share what radio this is and where you purchased? Was it plug and play like other Joying radios? Wireless CarPlay I assume? Any loss of vehicle information on the radio (i.e. the hybrid system, etc)?
Here is the link to the product I got https://a.aliexpress.com/_msNom2O Just have to contact the seller for the correct harness and canbus for your specific car. It is technically plug and play but because I got a larger screen, they don't make a kit to have everything physically installed easily. There's no mount, no frame, no bezel but everything plugs in properly with the supplied adapters. I had a radio shop do a custom install. This model actually both wireless android auto and wireless car play tho I've never tested or use it since it's basically a table on its own. All hybrid info still shows on the screen under an "app" called Car Info. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
The stock camera should work from what I've seen with other ppl that have used these Android headunits but I never tried it as I always used an aftermarket one. The OEM one is low resolution and looks even worse when it's blown up on a larger screen. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
This is the first large screen radio that really looks good to me. The Kenwoods that have a similar size are too tall.
Two other thoughts with respect to the radio. First, it seems you could disguise the gap, except for the single din protrusion, with a 3d printed bracket/frame. second, in looking at Ali Express, it seems that Joying also offers a 9 inch that they advertise as for the Prius. I’m wondering if that would fit perfectly in the existing space of the stock radio. I’d be willing to give up an inch of display size for a more stock look, with a much larger screen than stock, and still have a physical knob.
I have no experience with 3D printing and don't know the first thing about it.... I wish I did have something to help cover it... And, yes. Many vendors offer a 9" radio that fit. They provide a bezel and everything. That's what I had on my car previously but I got greedy and wanted something a tad bigger. I was thinking the OEM bezel could be sanded down and repainted but installer said no dice. Here's a pic of the 9" one I just removed. The visor was a separate pc I ordered. I don't see a volume knob on it, so I disagree that it looks good. That'd be a pain to live with from my perspective.
I did an experiment with my 2021 Prius today. I was supposed to fill it up this morning before the 80 mile round-trip drive to work but decided to see what would happen when she gets to "0" miles. So she never says "0" but "-----" When I filled her up, she took just over 9 gallons so I still had 1.2 gallons left. That's nice to know...I was worried I would have to call my wife to bring the gas can. Does anyone know if you can just run the car on "EV" mode and have to drive very slow when the gas tanks is dry? I've played around with the EV mode and you have to really baby the gas and once you hit around 20 mph it kicks itself off....so not much of an EV mode, IMHO!!
I had this confirmed some years ago. You can’t run Prius on pure EV if it runs out of gas you are stuffed.
If it's so dry that the engine starves and shuts off, it should throw a code. I would expect that to be the end of your driving till you add enough gas for it to register. (However, on a side note, I have driven my Prime the last 85 miles with the gas DTE sitting firmly at 10 miles. Sunday might bring it to zero since I have a 40 mile round trip to make. But even at zero gas DTE, there's still at least 1-1/2 gallons left. The problem is that there's no way to know the status after that point, so I'll be filling up soon after it goes to "--.") Of course, a regular Prius won't go more than a couple miles on EV and, as Paul said, once the ICE runs out of gas, you're done driving. So, while you can go for quite a ways on gas after the DTE says empty, it's pretty risky to push that since there is no indication of remaining fuel and no EV option to fall back on.
I think you can drive a Prius on electric after running out of gas, but only in the way any Prius ever drives on electric, namely, not very fast and not very far. When the fuel runs out and the engine stops, that'll be a P3191 and a P0A0F, but won't immediately lock the wheels or anything. You just can't forget that except in a Plug-in Prius or a Prime, the electric driving is very very limited. Limited enough that probably some drivers will have already reached the end of the battery capacity by the time they notice the engine stopped. In Gen 1, you could in fact keep driving to the real end of the battery capacity, so that you would then be well and truly stuck until you could refill the tank and replace the traction battery, or get a tow to a dealer and wait for them to bring the HV charger in from regional. I think that was fixed for Gen 2; you can keep driving on the battery, but the car will call a halt to that too once you are down to some low % charge, rather than keeping right on until the battery's clobbered.
I can confirm that on the 3rd gen, you can also run the car in EV after it runs out of gas--even at high speed. I tried the experiment a couple months ago, running it dry just to see how far after DTE showed 0 I could go. I thought it would go a few miles further, so I was driving at ~60 mph on a state highway when suddenly the gas engine shut off, some warning lights came on, the EV light came on and it continued driving at that speed for several minutes, until battery charge went down to 30% on the Scangauge. At that point, no juice and the car would only coast until I came to a stop. Put a gallon in and it started right back up.
It's good to know your vehicles limits and boundaries...glad I did it! I doubt I'll ever see that low gas light ever again...surprised it didn't make a "ding" sound when it came or or when it finally went below 1 mile left on the estimator. As mentioned, the "miles to go" isn't real miles...those are Prius miles....so it actually took me driving about 40 miles to get it go from 30 to "----" I'm a little concerned about my wife's 2017 Prius LE. Yesterday, she asked me to run to the drivethru to pick up something so I drove her car. When it started, the hybrid battery gauge was all full. Not 5 miles later, and about 10 minutes, I was sitting in the drivethru and heard the ICE turn on, the hybrid battery gauge was already down to two bars so the ICE popped on for recharging. (Her car has never had any codes or check engine lights and only has 27,000 miles.) Is this normal or just because those batteries (which I think are nickel) are already 5-years old?)
And IF it's not the cars normal behavior, Big IF, it's still really hard to tell, from one observation. The Prius does what it does and it's not always what the operator thinks it should do. If you're concerned enough, get an ODB2 bluetooth adapter and run DrPrius and or Hybrid Assistant and keep track of it.
