Fellow Prius C owners, I had my muffler replaced for the second time on this car a couple weeks ago. First time was in 2019). Brought it back to shop b/c I continued to hear some rattling from right rear & a bump/clank whenever I encountered any bumps in the road. Tech eliminated the rattle noise by removing the heat shield (is this okay). They tried to adjust the brackets holding muffler (said they bent it a few inches) to address the bump/clank. This was not successful, it still makes that noise when I hit anything - manhole cover, sewer grate, uneven pavement, anything... Service manager said there wasn’t anything else they could do except weld it in place (!?) which would void the warranty. “Cars make noise.” In my experience, this car doesn’t make noise, certainly not banging/clanking! Advice/ suggestions? This was a national franchise repair shop, btw, not a dealer or small independent shop. Thanks
You are dealing with some incompetent people. It sounds like they used a cheap aftermarket replacement that didn't fit properly the first time. I would give up on dealing with them, they will probably never get it right.
Why would welding it void the warranty? take it to another location or another shop entirely. I would say have them weld it.
NO, don't take it back. It's NOT OK to remove heat shields; they have a purpose. Manufacturers are always trying to simplify things and cut cost; do you really think they would install an unnecessary heat shield? Jump on Yelp or Repairpal and find a credible muffler shop or ask your friends; also take a look at your current shops rating. Hope this helps PS. get that heat shield put back on; before something melts and/or causes more issues.
