    Petrol is £1.60 at the moment. A full tank (43l) is £68.80. In my 4th Gen I’ve got 600 miles out of a full tank only a few times, in summer, and by driving 65 miles past the ———— DTE. Driving normally I typically get 450-520.

    How much is the cost of your gasoline per gallon ... is that £1.60 per liter, or us, or imperial gallon or what ...

    just trying to compared to fuel prices in the USA

    It’s £1.60ish per litre from supermarkets. Higher elsewhere. That’s £7.28 ($9.55) per UK imperial gallon / £6.06 ($7.87) per US gallon if my maths is correct.

    You're still comparing a large SUV with a hatchback. Would you compare a Range Rover with a Prius and say the Prius is better because it uses less fuel?

    A somewhat more comparable vehicle is the model 3/Y that uses only about 65% the amount of electricity of the Model X.

    Even then they are are not very comparable vehicles - here in California the fuel cost of my Prius is about the same as the Tesla when using normal rate electricity at about 10 cents/mile. But the driving experience is dramatically different.

    The Model 3 is much more equivalent to a car such as a BMW 328 (that I have also owned in the past), but very few people would compare a BMW to a Prius.

    I agree, I wouldn't buy a Tesla Model 3/Y just to reduce overall vehicle cost. I don't think many people do.

    The fact that the fuel costs are comparable at all is pretty impressive, the two cars have a somewhat different customer demographic although there is a surprising amount of overlap. I have heard of many people that have owned both.

    We own a Tesla 20 Model 3 long range and a 2016 4th generation Prius.
    The Tesla is almost always charged at home overnight when Ontario hydro drops their rates quite dramatically. This makes a huge difference in operating costs. In 2 years of ownership the only maintenance in the Tesla was lubricating the brake callipers that was done by the mobile tech in my driveway.
    The Prius is a nice car to own but not comparable in terms of operating costs , ride quality, interior space for passengers etc.
    Many Tesla owners went from owning hybrids to full electric Tesla’s as they wanted to get away from using fossil fuels .
    We kept our Prius mainly because our 16 year old was scared to learn how to drive on the Model 3

    Does not surprise me a bit. I don't know much about UK gas and electric rates, but even in the US, our region has a higher electric rate of $0.25/kWh than gas prices until very recently. For me, $3/gal gas was a break-even price. The gas price stayed below $3/gal for the last 5+ years. Even at today's $4/gal gas price, the public charger cost is ~$0.42/kWh, making the driving Prius on gasoline at $4/gal cheaper.

    Yep, there is no saving $ in the BEV for me. But saving the earth may be enough reason to switch.

    I was talking to a friend who bought a new Model 3 last September and asked him how he liked it. First of all, he said he did not buy it to save money. Instead, he likes the performance, the autopilot (lane keep), over-the-air updates, and the high-tech interface (control screen/tablet). BTW, he first ordered his car in March 2021 and took delivery in Sept 2021 after one (not his) came available when someone else turned it down.

    Well, it doesn’t surprise me either when he compared a fuel efficient car with a much larger SUV.
    I also wouldn’t be surprised if the Prius was more fuel efficient than an Escalade ;)

    Is Model X Performance an SUV? I have no idea. But, even if I do a similar comparison between Model 3 and PP, I have a feeling that the result is similar in that PP with gas will be cheaper... unless somehow the SuperCharger fee is much cheaper than CSS charger. The Plug Share info on most SuperCharger just says "Payment Required" so I don't know what the rate is. Are they fixed rates everywhere? And what is the rate structure?

    Oh, the Model X is the one with the butterfly doors that I have seen on the YouTube video crashing as it entered into a garage with both doors swang open. I have not yet seen one in the wild. And even if I do see one, I don't know if I would recognize it as an SUV. Not a typical shape of an SUV I am accustomed to seeing.

    Yes, it is an SUV.
    It may be that gas in a Prius would still be less than electricity in a Model 3, but there is a fair difference between a 3 and an X.
    That is why the OP got all the flak he did.

    The supercharger rates are typicall priced just under gasoline in each region. This is generally measured against the average fuel economy, so a Prius will have cheaper gas, where a Tahoe would be cheaper charging.

    The rate structure varies depending upon local laws. Some places won’t allow charges per kWh. In those cases Tesla charges a two tier rate/min cost as a rough approximation.

    All rates and supercharger availability appear on the car’s nav map.

    Thank for the explanation. Not that I will be using that info anywhere, but it's nice to know that the Supercharger rate is not as super inflated as some CSS charger rates I have seen on the PlugShare. Most CSS charge stations I have checked along the route I may take if I have a BEV is currently charging $0.42/kWh. That's 40% more than my current home rate of $0.25/kWh. Looking at the table on @hill comment above, that is equivalent to $5/gal of gas. And, the current record high level of gas price is $4.05/gal in my area, making the gas still cheaper than public charger electricity.

    The bottom line is that the public charger rate on the road is usually higher than the home electricity rate. And even for the home charging, there are regions in the US and maybe regions in other countries as well, where the electricity rate is not as cheap as gas.

    Yea - with Lake Powell and Lake Mead being so low, the electrical generators at the dams will be sucking air shortly. Won't get squat for property after that

    Unfortunately, If you don't own a Tesla, it's very difficult to find out what the rates would be for any particular drive that depends on Tesla's superchargers. That makes comparisons almost impossible. It's made even more difficult if you have to factor in the "loitering penalties" that Tesla charges in cases where customers are slow to unplug and leave a high demand supercharger site. Maybe that's why I seldom see an empty car at a supercharger site? Who wants to enjoy a nice lunch while your car charges if you are going to be penalized by the minute for overstaying your welcome?
