Looking for out of state purchase help.

I purchased my Prius in Maryland, drove it home to Vermont. The MSO, which we requested from the dealer, arrived in the mail. I recollect that it took a bit longer than the dealer suggested it would take to come, but it did get to us.

Over the phone and internet I applied for a toyota car loan for 20k and said i would put 6K down.
They approved the loan and I flew down from Long Island NY. oneway and gave them the 6k down.
I drove out of the dealership with my blue prius after 1 hour of paperwork.

Car dealers do things differently regarding the MSO. Miller toyota would not give me the mSO.
Instead they gave me 30day temp dealer plates. (before flying down I gave my insurance company the VIN# and the gave me a proof of insurance slip). I drove it home with the temp dealer plates.
And miller toyota worked with a title company in NY state and they registered my car and mailed me the plates and title.
It took about 30 days to get the NY plates.
They charged me about $250.00 extra but since I got $2400.00 off the car I had no problem with it.

They said some states, car dealers can work with title companys to register out of state cars.
It depends on the out of state dealer you are working with and the state you are living in.

In my case, I just bought my 07 TE Prius last weekend from an Indiana dealership. Gotten the 31 day tag and drove it back home the same day.

I just gotten a call from the dealership yesterday that my title was in, so they are going to mail it to me today certified mail. That is what I am going to need, and the tax document that shows that the tax was paid when I register my car here in Michigan. MI requires either the title or MCO document for me to register.

Since I still have my Olds I am simply going to transfer the plate to the Prius since it will be much cheaper ($8 to transfer plus $15 for title) than buying a new plate.

When buying out of state be sure you check with your state's DMV regarding the tax, as some states will allow you to use the tax (with proof) you paid to the other state to be applied to your home state tax when you register (as long as the tax rate in both states are the same). Hope this helps

 

i'm a wi resident, got the prius down here in nc. we got the mco in about 3 weeks. had to file all the paperwork ourselves, but that wasn't too big of a deal. good luck

 

I live in Oregon and purchased my car in Washington due to availability. The Washington dealer mailed the paper work to the DMV office in the town where I live, they phoned me and told me to come in and get my license plates.

 

If you buy a car out of state, I think that you only owe tax to the state where you live and the car will be registered.
