I'm picking up a 2013 Prius with a blown engine. Wondering if there are any suggestions about where to source a decent engine from. I've read that the JDM engines are mostly a scam, not sure how true that is. I considered swapping in a gen 4 engine, but since this is my first engine swap I'd like to avoid the extra headaches this time around.

JDM engine is the way to go. You don't have to return your junk core to them so they can sell to someone else. If anything is a scam, it would be the operations that want your core back

Good to know, thank you. Any good things to do "while I'm in there" anyway? Water pump, gaskets, etc.?

Jdm motors should have around 50-60k miles. Just swap the engine and fire it up. New oil and coolant and you should be good.
