Loud PSSSS sound while Refurbing batt

    So I'm using a hobby charger to refurb a used set of cells.

    I've got a CQ3. 7200mah capacity, 5A charge, 1A discharge, 6v discharge votlage.

    I just started cycling - the batt temps are in the 50/60's F

    One of them just made a loud PSSSSS sound, like pressure was just relieved.

    Is this OK?

    Charging at 5 amps into a module caused its pressure release valve to release. Usually this happens on a bad module. Shouldn't happen on a good module.

    If 5a causes it, imagine what 50 or more does on regen. I'd imagine that module is done.

    yes! was one that I knew was most likely bad. I just changed from 5A to 2A and then set my delta peak to 20mV instead of auto. The 5A spooked me . . . thanks so much!

    I'm always on the hunt for the tiniest diameter water balloons they sell because they fit over the vent covers of the modules perfectly... That way when a module fails it inflates the balloon and captures the toxic fumes so I don't breathe them. It's also an additional way to identify bad modules before they go bad. This one offers similar results as a thermal camera does because the cells that run hotter than the others are the ones that tend to fail in this way.
