C1231 Error Code

Any other error codes? Take a look at the following document about testing the angle sensor

 

There might be an INFormation code of 701, 702, or 703 that goes with your C1231, read with a Prius-capable reader, that would help narrow down the cause of the issue. The repair manual on techinfo.toyota.com will have a procedure for completing the diagnosis; turn to the skid control section, look up your code, turn to the indicated page, start following the steps and making the checks as instructed.

Not in a way I could think of offhand. If it were mine, I'd spend my time following the diagnostic steps in the manual ... straightest path to a solution.

Did you ever fix the C1231 issue and if so how? I've got the same problem after replacing the spiral cable.

If the problem first appeared right after you changed the spiral cable, first recheck whether the steering angle sensor is even there.

Meaning- if you installed an aftermarket spiral cable, did you remove the angle sensor from the old cable and put it on the new one before you installed it on the car?
AFAIK a genuine Toyota cable assembly comes with a new angle sensor (part of why it costs so much more $$).

the sensor is installed but it is reading 850.5
and dont change with steering turns.

I just wanted to post a reply in case anyone else has this issue. I saw my sensor throw a c1231 code and it was stuck at -850.5 degrees. From what I learned from various Russian & Chinese sites and videos, there is a 93c66 chip on the steering angle sensor that stores a fault code when the sensor is turned out of range and it does not clear. There are these chip readers you can use (ch341a) if you can manage to solder it and then connect to computer via USB to rewrite the code to clear it.

I tried this, but did not have the experience or tools to do so. I ended up just buying a used Clockspring / steering angle sensor assembly from eBay and thankfully it worked.
