Anyone install one of these things in a 4th Gen? As my mechanic was installing my prius off road lift he started going on about someone coming in with a 3rd Gen to install a performance VVT solenoid. He said it’s supposed to increase HP/passing power.
The claim made for these products has consistently been: (a) it makes valve timing changes happen faster than with the stock valve, and (b) because of (a), happy things with performance and driveability ensue. Last September, mr_guy_mann put up the first (known to me) direct test of whether (a) happens. The test was done by scoping the crankshaft and camshaft sensors, which had already been identified two years earlier as the way it would have to be done. Data from OBD-II would not suit the purpose because of the delays in polling OBD-II and getting replies. The work does have (for now) one methodological weakness, small sample size; it was well designed in taking multiple runs with each type of valve, but having purchased only one sample of each type, it cannot (by itself) rule out whether the single sample of any of the valve types was a dud. But it is a very good start on getting some basic information about this product that has been overdue for a couple years now. I think mr_guy_mann has made some effort since then toward extending the work with more than one of each valve.
I have an enhanced track version of the Red Bullet. There is a difference in power. I recently got a rebuilt engine and had the OEM solenoid installed with it. Then after a few thousand miles I switched it to the Red Bullet, and yes I can feel the difference between the two. I would say go for it and enjoy your prius even more. Worked great for me in my little G2 mutt. The much higher horse power of a G4 would be fun. Really easy to install 2 ten Mm bolts pull it out slam it in. That’s what she said.
