Squirrels are living proof that humans should have NOTHING to do with (mis)managing the planet.

Some humans actually FEED squirrels, while many apex predators are sickened or killed every year when they eat a rodenticide addled, "less attractive" rodent.

    So.....
    I asked the the googles:
Is it legal to kill a squirrel?

    Their Reply:
"The Short Answer… The short answer to is it illegal to kill squirrels is yes, it's illegal to kill squirrels without a permit in many states. ... You cannot kill squirrels offseason unless they have damaged your property, and even in that case, you will need to obtain a permit first."

When asked if it is legal to kill a rat.....they 'opined'.....
Most jurisdictions in the United States not only permit you to kill rats, they sometimes require you to. ... While the law exempts “commensal rodents” that live in houses, it covers “rice rats” that live in high grass, trees, and flower beds. The law also applies to squirrels and chipmunks.

Just like the CDC (or NYT) -eh? ;)

    By the way.....
One particular ground pig was killed by one particular NYC mayor.
As far as I know not only was he not charged with groundhog murder, he might have been re-elected afterwards....

Part of the reason for the different stance in the laws covering rodentcide legality is that squirrels are a native species in the US, while the rats people regularly cross paths with are introduced. It's the reason why you are free to kill pigeons, starlings, and a certain sparrow, but can run into serious problems for killing any other song bird.

If I wanted to kill off a bunch of song birds, I'd put out a squirrel-resistant bird feeder, which I refer to as 'cat-feeders.' :D

As I was installing a french drain to combat the garage slab sweat in spring the wood chuck started a tunnel from the ditch I'd dug on the opposite side of the garage from the original tunnel. I put a spade shovel in front of the new tunnel entrance and did some googling on how others dealt with similar things in urban areas. Within a few hours, the shovel was pushed away from the tunnel and luckily so far (fingers crossed), I haven't found any new tunnels under the garage since. Although a neighbors wood fence has been chewed for access between yards after having filled in multiple ~10 fence tunnels. Families of Squirrel and Raccoon and skunk have been been annoying in the neighborhood too. Ever seen raccoon standing 4 ft on it's hind legs at 3am with the misses and 7 yearlings?

    OP again.....

So, sorry to be late in reporting back. Ran into some issues on the home/relative front and had little chance to do much about the squirrelly situation.

Was intrigued by the fancy studfinder mentioned by TMR-JWP: Walabot DIY: The Only Visual Stud Finder | Award Winning Wall Scanner & Stud Finder.

Ordered a "like new" unit from Amazon, but it came missing some parts. So never ever powered it up before sending it back -- at least the refund was issued as soon as the UPS store scanned my return package.

My new plan is to haul most of me stuff out of the shed -- that's a day and a half of work -- pile it up under some tarps and then cut out windows in the plywood and send my shop vac hose on a search and destroy mission between all the studs. Sort of like invasion of the black snake. I have a extra long (25 foot???) shop vac hose.

Then, try to find point of access....

I should be hauling junk now, but as usual, am goofing off instead. But in 20 more minutes...Oh, I bought a Harbor Freight bargain for the job....

You could end up sucking up some baby squirrels.

You didn't like the idea of dropping naphtha/moth balls down between the studs to drive any critters away and to repel them from coming back?

    RE: Mothballs.

Well, maybe it sounds silly, but, technically throwing mothballs into a wall space is "illegal." Not that I don't do a few "illegal" things most days (mostly not signalling lane changes).

But, I figure if it is illegal, must be a good reason....But I forgot about the apple cider vinegar suggestion. Just bought a gallon of it. A little leery, as I am suspicious the apple smell might ATTRACT more critters, but may give it a try in the morning.

I would deal with how they are getting into the hut first.

I had the same problem when I bought my place it has a very big outbuilding 20x35.
Previous owner never covered the gap under the eves no soffit. There’s a gap between the roof studs. It’s like a lighted entrance for squirrels.
    And rats. And possums.

You may be missing the soffit if so I found a easy way to cover that gap Lowes sells tin vents that are used in soffits for venting. They bend too. They come in 8 foot lengths. There about 10 inches wide. There for the old style home made wood soffit that that the vent strip runs the length of the soffit. Come in brown and white. Cheap.

I cut prescision lengths of it with a tin snip to fit between the roof studs and screwed them over the gaps. No more squirrels. Not a one.

I really don't know how they are getting in, but I suspect it is from underneath.

I scraped and leveled to bare earth, set down concrete blocks and then set down 4X6 pressure treated beams as a foundation (when I say "I" what I mean is my money did it.....I hired a pro)

There appears to be no access from the roof. I have a inkling they are getting in from underneath somewhere, but had three relatives die in the past six months (none of CoVid -- just old age) and a LOT of their junk got thrown in my shed, so it looks as if some hoarder took over the building -- finding my tools is an experience in balance and patience.

I have wood soffits all-around the top and they all appear solid.

The hole just needs to be big enough for their head.

Give the contractor a call . see if he has any suggestions where or how. The pic looks like it's a nice shed from the outside anyway.

That shed looks 100 times nicer then mine. There's a sneaky little hole somewhere.

Well, I put on my "get covered in muck" Carhartt overalls and about 10 a.m. (once the temperature crawled into the 40sF), I went in the shed moved a heck of a lot of stuff outside and covered it with <squirrel-chewed> tarps.

Then crawled around the floor looking for egress/access points, but found none.

Went off and did some work on my car and came back. Looked around again, no luck.

Went outside about 3 p.m. and was sort of just standing there in bafflement, when I noticed an irregularity near the edge of the roof and some bare wood -- found the spot. I would have found it a lot sooner, but I was sure the roofline was totally fine.

It was not much, but just enough. It was getting later and colder and I figured I would be a nice landlord and give them one more night. Taking the day off tomorrow and starting eviction with vacuum hoses and plumber's snakes. Then, I will patch the hole with a hardwood board, maybe wrapped in hardware cloth??? I am not much of a carpenter, so will have to look again and think about it. I actually thought I could possibly wiggle a piece of capped PVC in the hole and I still may try that method.

My parents had a building with bats once.

Dealing with that was a multi-step proposition: first find the access points and install one-way bat-valves (!). Then, after waiting long enough to be sure they're all out, close the holes for good.

Depending on the season, whole procedure has to be delayed until sure no young are present.

You might want to take pictures inside and out. Ya never know for sure what will happen next, or where.
