Yes you'd like to have that in pretty much any climate unless you're in the cold forever Alaska even there at times you'd probably want it it is needed to funnel that air correctly easy to get at a junkyard usually too

It's not worth spending $60 on... But before this Summer you're gonna want to find a Prius at a junkyard and pull this part off... It'll set you back about $20.

I agree there isn't more than about $5's worth of plastic there, if that. It's actually an $84 part at most dealerships it looks like, I saw 1 on eBay that was in the 90s. But is it really needed? With the ducting in place, the cooling fan will pull interior air - that still happens when the ducting is missing. The same door pillar intake vent is still the path of least resistance (airflow).

Besides, I've only found one junkyard Prius within 500 miles (so far) and it's a Gen2.
Besides2, I hope to have repairs to this Gen3 finished before summer, so I can sell it (it's a 3rd vehicle).

Yes, it will pull air from somewhere, unfiltered air. And it probably will survive without the duct.
But it was there for a reason, or it just wouldn't be there.

Depending on how much time and effort you want to put into it, if you search enough, you will
probably be able to find one on ebay, or searching junkyards online for a lower price.

So, there's supposed to be a filter somewhere in that inlet air path? I guess I'll have to source one of those too - but looking at pictures of it it doesn't appear to be much more than something like a dryer lint filter - or is this not the right part?

I think Toyota introduced the "snap on" filter, as an optional extra, in maybe 2012? I wouldn't sweat it, don't think it's that effective. I'd agree with others: as long as the fan is working it's "fairly" effectively cooling the hybrid battery. Only thing: it's drawing it's air from anywhere in there, behind the rear seat. Probably a lot still comes through the grill in the seat back, but it'd be more of a mix.

For the older part number, this link might be cheaper for you, depending on the shipping charge. In instances where the it's not displayed, you do get to see the shipping charge before committing:

Buy Genuine Toyota G92D147010 (G92D1-47010) Duct, Hybrid Battery Intake, No.1 for Toyota Prius. Prices, fast shipping, photos - Amayama

Here's the newer part number, even cheaper:

Buy Genuine Toyota G92D147011 (G92D1-47011) Duct, Hybrid Battery Intake, No.1 for Toyota Prius. Prices, fast shipping, photos - Amayama

    Again, dependent on shipping charge.

I believe you are talking about a Gen 2 Prius? I am not sure about the filter, but I "think" I've seen
    videos about them having one.
On the Gen 3, there is a mess one. I added to that with a foam filter. They keep the dirt and fur out.
when I installed the Prolong harness, there was just a trace of dust, and not fur.
