When I first got my 2018 Prius Prime, I got up to 28 miles on a full charge. Now I'm lucky to get 20. Am I doing something wrong?
Tire pressure, lights, AC/heat, speed, all effect range. Stop and go is the best for range. Mine gets a little more than advertised. I have been driving my PP without ever charging for months with a consistent 74ish MPG. As below cold!
ignore the guess o meter. how many miles can you drive on back roads around 30mph starting with a full charge until the engine comes on?
That is the same cycle I see each year. Groundhog day is not an indication of Spring coming. It's when you see EV miles returning.
It all depends on how bad you want to see more EV miles. I use the EV miles estimate ( to see if I can beat it), and if you can drive between 4 and 5 hours in EV between 15 to 5 mph, with no one pushing from behind (almost impossible these days) and without getting completely bored out of you wits, the Prime will show you beating the EV estimate by a lot, and every time. And the more one drives the Prime in a similar way ( not necessarily 5 to 15mph for 4 to 5 hours ), and watch the gauges (cause that's pretty much all there is to look at, and train your foot to back off the Go Pedal instead of pushing it down (because the muscles in the foot and leg are already trained to push the Go Petal and push the brake pedal) the Prime works with you and teaches you how to get the most out of it. When you get compelely bored with EV miles there are plenty of other ways to see just how far you can drive the Prime in other modes, in the extreme cold, on nice sunny warm days, in the rain, snow and freezing cold when others have their cars start the ICE as soon as they push the On Button. It doesn't have to be that way if you want it enough. There used to be a lot more hypermilers around here, than there are now, at least that I've seen lately. Times have changed and a lot of those (Priuschat hypermilers of old ) now drive Model 3's they've upgraded from Gen 3 Prius Plugins.
My 2017 prime is currently 40K miles. Now I can only drive 20 miles with full power, and the battery is attenuated by 1/3.
Since it warmed up, 30 miles is pretty easy. When it's not too hot, turning off AC, keeping ECO engaged to flow a bit air, and cracking the windows, I can get 40. Have to watch hills, they suck current. I find myself rolling stop signs too - if there's nothing around.
The EV Battery Mileage estimator is wacky on my Prius Prime 2017 edition. Prior I would get 23.4 (no air con) miles on the daily... but for some reason today (Mid-Summer) I am seeing 27.4 miles (no air con) this morning!!! 58164 on the odometer. And the Prius battery is now 5+ years old !!!
