I try to do a good job cleaning the snow off the car, but there is always snow that make its way in the wedge shown here in red. The end result is the hatch does not make it all the way up, rather the crush of the body hitting the snow ice stops it from fully extending. My snow brush does not made all the way in the wedge. Going to use compressed air to blow it out. This has been the only annoying aspect of the Prime in winter for me.
I have the same issue after a windy period. As I have had with other hatchback style rear doors. Trunk lids have long hinge arms so do not have the same issue. iPhone ?
@Salamander_King, this sounds like a thread a while back about keeping out the leaves. Do you remember what was done? They found some kind of rubber gasket. I seem to recall that you were in on the conversation. I haven't had any luck googling it.
Yeah, you can install a rubber molding of the sort that would just fit in the gap between the hatch door on the top and roof of the body. BUT, I don't think that would prevent the problem of snow or ice from getting into the crevasse completely. Leaves yes, but snow or ice no. The problem is that the snow gets in the section when you open the hatch then melts and refreezes in place. Unless you are very meticulous to make sure that all the snow on the roof is gone before you open the hatch door, you will end up with some snow getting in there. Plus whatever the snow on the roof near the hatch door will prevent the door to swing open all the way. Here is what the rubber molding looked like when I was sliding into the space. I bought several different sizes and shapes. I can look it up what I bought, but I don't have this car anymore. It was on my previous 2020 PP LE. I haven't done the same for my current 2021 PP. Here is the pic of the profile of two moldings I tried. I think the one on the left fit better.
If the black plastic cover above the rear window would have had a lip over hanging the rear window, it may have helped to avoid the issue. Is there enough rear window edge for the rubber moulding to grip on? iPhone ?
I think so. My PP is not here now, so I can't confirm. But IIRC, the edge of the glass at the top of the hatch door slide into the space in the "C" shaped portion of the gasket. The only problem was that once inserted into place, it made the opening of the hatch rather difficult. I never installed it permanently for that reason.
I used the weatherstripping shown in the attached photo. It's widely available on ebay or amazon. The 0.39 inch side pinches the top of the window. The 0.31 inch side fits down into the space and blocks it off so snow & ice can't get any further down. It might be possible to trim the 0.31 inch side so that it just fills the space, but this is good enough for now. Ed
