I am located in South OC and was wondering if I can borrow a Catalytic Converter for a quick smog check. I have a out of state catalytic converter which isn't going to pass. I know it's a shot in the dark, but figured I would ask if someone was kind enough to let me use it for a day. In return I would be able to help out with any mechanical work on any of your vehicles. I have rebuilt several motors and do all of my own work. Let me know. Thanks!
Ohh man our neighborhood always has cars catalytic converters stolen :/ I definitely don't want that karma from doing that!
Wow the two responses are ways to steal one? Sorry for those poor responses and maybe try your luck. They never looked under my car at smogs. I do not think anyone would loan you one but maybe if you left your Driver license and a deposit plus the one you are removing and a signed note? http://www.RedBullet.net http://www.ProjectLithium.com/?ref=mG0GE http://www.Pulstar.com http://www.PlugOutPower.com Use code 7373
I don't mind the humor. Probably healthy to laugh about stolen Prius cats since that is a real problem we all think about. But that being said, I'd use the Sawzall for sure. Real cat thieves are brazen and don't care about the noise, so embrace the noise. /S I live in SoCal too and there are many small smog test only businesses that will do a pretest for a small fee. They do the equivalent test without your car being jacked into the state computers to make sure you're going to pass. As long as error codes don't pop up in the ECM they're probably gonna let you slide and if you pass the pretest you are going to get the smog cert. I paid $8 on one of my cars for the pretest and when it didn't show codes I was told it was good to go. I did the test and passed... it really shouldn't have with an aftermarket cat. Just something to consider.
It's cheaper and easier to find a shady smog guy. I would spend your energy finding that smog guy instead. SM-A526U ?
The purpose wasn't solely humor. Outraged people generate clicks. Clicks may generate a solution..... ACTUAL mileage will vary.
You could also get the CARB compliant Magnaflow cat for $590. and pay a muffler shop to install. You'd be legal this way and much less expensive than the OEM part, which is difficult to source sometimes. MagnaFlow California Grade CARB Compliant Universal Catalytic Converter
I can't believe that people in SoCal aren't renting out their original cats for $200 per day. Heck, you could buy a new Toyota one and have it paid for within a few weeks.
All you have to worry about is that the person "renting" the cat actually returns it. It's not like you can go to the police if they don't. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
