It was not bad for Republicans. It was bad for this sanctimonious, old-money, treasonous bunch of old-style, old-boy Southern Democrats, masquerading as Republicans. The Republicans I know are appalled by the crazy spending, combined with misdirected tax-cuts (to the oil industry, instead of, say, payroll?!) Or by the crazy Drug boondoggle, which makes the CA electric industry "deregulation" scheme seem intelligent. Someone missed Economics 101.... The Republicans I know are for limiting government meddling in our private lives, not for regulating who people sleep with, or marry. Or ascribing "personhood" to a couple of cells.... The Republicans I know were with James Baker and Norman Schwarzkopf, in shouting in the wind that the war in Iraq was against American interests.... I can go on and on.... Divided government rocks

It bought them 15 years in power, and now they are paying the price. The repub party of today is not the party of Barry Goldwater, let alone the party of Abraham Lincoln.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Black2006 @ Nov 8 2006, 06:27 PM) </div> And if it were those Repubs in office today, I would be supporting them. Unfortunately, I know NO Republicans like that--except in history books.
It sucks fearsomely. I hope the Republicans learn something constructive from this. The theme to "Archy Bunker" is running through my head right now.
I won't nail myself to the republican party, I tend to vote/support ideology which typically would be aligned with the Republican candidates. Abortion and Gay Marriage are two of my top deal breakers. And, this election doesn't hit me that hard. I do see other conservatives acting as if the sky has fallen. The 5 year view of this through the 2008 presidential cycle looks more encouraging now than if the repubs would have held the chambers. For the next two years, it's for the dems to disgust the voters. I don't see any way they can be successful at anything given the lay of the land. If they ran a super tight ship, they might have a great two years and build toward 2008, but I am counting on them not doing that. They are like a pitbull just got off the chain for the first time in 12 years. They're gonna ravage the Bush admin for two years and find out at election time, the public is just so sick of them. Cool... I was talking it over with people in the office today after Rummy quit. How cool would it be if Bush and Cheney pull the troops out of Iraq in the next week... Drop everything on the ground right where you are standing and just fly home... Then, Bush/Cheney line up, tell america... here's your troops home... just what you asked for... You're all screwed within a year, I've been telling you that for the last 3 years and now finally to wrap it up, I Quit... and... I Quit.... Dennis Hastert as commander in chief for the next two years... Bush, Cheney and Rummy catching fish in Jackson Hole Wyoming in early april. When Pelosi calls for a hearing, they all 3 flip her the bird and toss in the line for another fish.

Those were the days!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(EricGo @ Nov 8 2006, 06:38 PM) </div> This is a supremely ironic statement considering that 'Bush's Brain', Karl Rove, was weaned on, and purports to ascribe to, the mantra and ideology of none other than Barry Goldwater. Rove was, in fact, one of Goldwater's 'Young Republicans' during his college days in the sixties.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(daronspicher @ Nov 8 2006, 07:34 PM) </div> Okay, you're an American...let me get this straight...you're willing to sacrifice the wellbeing of our entire country to prove some singular political point? So, which will make you happier? ---If you're right, and the country goes to hell in such an absurd scenario...? ---Or if you're wrong, and it doesn't...? Sounds to me like the former. If that's so, then people like you -- with views like these -- are the *real* threats to National Security. You're throwing the baby out with the bathwater. You're advocating the downfall of the United States of America -- everything we are, have been, and have yet to be -- just to prove to the 'liberals' that the 'conservatives' were right? This is *not* what it's all about. I know you're joking (please confirm), but...c'mon.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(rudiger @ Nov 8 2006, 04:38 PM) </div> Hm, if you want to speak of ironic and of Goldwater's 'Young Republicans,' one of them was also a young woman named Hillary Rodham.... She campaigned for Barry Goldwater in 1964

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Pinto Girl @ Nov 8 2006, 04:43 PM) </div> Right on the money, as usual, Pinto Girl! Except that rather than "prove to the 'liberals' that the 'conservatives' were right" they want to prove to the unaligned public that the liberals are evil.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(tripp @ Nov 8 2006, 06:00 PM) </div> They won't. Republicans aren't what they use to be. Real Republicans need to break off from the neo conservatives who has hijacked the party. I miss being able to vote for a good moderate Republican. The only moderate Republicans now a days seems to be conservative Democrats.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Pinto Girl @ Nov 8 2006, 07:43 PM) </div> Pinto, pay him no mind. He's apparently off his meds again. Without them, he's a troll.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Pinto Girl @ Nov 8 2006, 06:43 PM) </div> Wait a minute.... Troops out of Iraq, Bush and Cheney resign.... How would that not be the perfect day on Prius Chat? I think I made a point that Bush is right to stay there and only suggested that he give you everything this board has wanted (and according to exit polls, the wise americans).... and by suggesting that you get everything you want, you are knocking me by saying I'd be happy if our country went to hell in such a scenerio? No, it wouldn't make me happy, but I do believe you are right on the money with the outcome if all these idiots get the BS request they are making. Troops out of Iraq, troops out of Iraq, why does one soldier have to die, the war is expensive, you're hurting the enemy during interrogation, you're listening to phone calls, damn Bush, DAMMIT BUSH!!!!! Now, you're saying to hold the phone, maybe the pullout isn't really the right idea? Why? What could possibly go wrong if we just pull out? All of the sudden, giving you and everyone in America exactly what ya'll want is "advocating the downfall of the United States of America " I don't think downfall of America is the outcome. I do think we get a whopper of a whoopin from the ideologies who live to destroy us if we let off the war on terror. I do think there is such a whollop to America possible that financial systems collapse, infrastructures (communications, electric, water) collapse, governments end up in emergency mode... If we do all the right things that allow our enemies to mount the attack on us here. We could let them have scholarships to our top nuclear physics masters programs and how about admission to our best flight schools for a few years... What could it hurt? Bush is a better man than most. At some point, you just say screw it, and walk away.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Black2006 @ Nov 8 2006, 06:27 PM) </div> It was so bad they're trying to say the Republicans responsible are really Democrats.
