Evan, you refute your own point. Here's what I mean:

I know I want a Prius, and I know I want one with Package 9, and would probably accept almost any color. I know that there is a waiting list anywhere I go, most longer than the one I put myself on.

If I read your post correctly, you say that they may call me and say that my car is in but has all kinds of "profit" additions like Toyoguard, and that really makes me a prisoner to them. Well guess what? Everyone on any wait list is such a prisioner, because most people are going to take any 2004 Prius they can get their hands on! For me, any Prius with package 9 will do.

You say that I have limited my options...how? I could only afford to be on one list, whether the deposit was refundable or not, $500 or $1000. Are you suggesting that I put myself on multiple lists just to see which one comes up first? Well I simply can't afford that, refundable or not.

Finally, I made sure that the order papers I signed were clear, so that the dealership couldn't try to add $3000 to the price once the car arrives, or try other shenanigans.

So I say again, if you KNOW you want a Prius, regardless of the wait time, then get on a list that has a non-refundable deposit. Why? The chaff has already been removed from those lists! (e.g. the people on multiple lists, those not serious or just keeping their options open, etc).

I fail to see how that's not good advice since the Prius will not be available on the lots for a long time to come, if at all. Doesn't that make us all prisoners of a sort?

As I tried to make clear, but apparently failed, is that you are correct IF your dealership is being honest with you. I think that's a pretty big IF.

I see this situation MUCH differently. If they du a bunch of high profit add ons to try to rip me off somewhere that I have a refundable deposit I just take my deposit and walk. As you sit they can hold that $1000 over your head, make you wait for a few more allocations, sell your car to someone off the street from under you and you have no recourse what so ever.

What if you fall on sudden, unexpected, financial hardship? What if, during your wait, your current car is totalled and you have to replace it immediately? What if a dealer 50 miles down the road from you made a post on this forum today and had a package #9 in Tideland pearl, but no one on his list of 20 waiting for a package #9 wanted that color and he was putting it up for grabs you'd have no chance at it without losing your $1000 deposit. If your dealership isn't being 100% honest with you (and I sincerely hope they are) and you're much farther down the list than they say and allocations improve and other places start getting cars you'll be unable to take advantage. BTW, 2 refundable $500 deposits is the same as a $1000--I know, that's snide, but just to make a point. Some people are putting their name on multiple lists. I think, in the current market, that there's really nothing majorly wrong with that--it's a seller's market and the buyer needs to take any advantage (within reason) he/she can. But that's a question only the individual can answer and depends a lot on the relationship you have with your 'primary' dealer.

    Smart...that should help a lot.

Remember, if there really is a big problem with a lot of people on the refundable deposit lists (I honestly don't think there is at all--your opinion and experiences may be otherwise), it still doesn't matter. If there is a list and you're #20 on that list at dealership A and 3/4ths of the people on that list, for whatever reason, put down a $500 refundable deposit and then decide they don't want their car when it comes and ask for their money back then you're still going to be in exactly the same situation (ie the person getting the 5th available car.) AND you've preserved your ability to take advantage of any availability elsewhere and your right to walk away if the deal goes bad.

If you have a refundable deposit you can change your mind during the intermitable wait and buy something else without being out cash. I think the right to change our mind up to the last minute is quite fair. Ever bought a house? Even when we bought our $300K + house we put down only $750 "earnest money"--and, if we'd soured on the deal at the last minute that would be returned to us. Non-refundable deposits favor the seller only. The deposit should be made in good faith, some people will, indeed, renig (sp?) on those, but the vast majority would never lay down $500 if they weren't sincere in their intentions to buy. Nobody's a prisoner if they have the key to the cell--we might lock ourselves in, but we always know we can walk away when we feel our sentence has gone on too long.

Again, I wish you luck. In ALL likelyhood things will work out quite well. I've a definate anti-dealer penchant as I've had several try to screw me at the last minute, play word and number games and I have little faith. I insist on retaining the upper hand in any dealings. Not everyone works that way and clearly you do not. We just see too many stories on the various threads of people going to pick up their cars with what they thought were chiselled-in-stone deals only to find unexpected add ons and take it or leave it attitudes. I think if you give a dealership the opportunity to take advantage of you with something like a non-refundable deposit that it increases the likelyhood that they will try. I think you have covered some of that with your contract so hopefully all will be well.

My only point is that I don't think your method is good general information for everyone--individual situations may vary and your way may be best in your situation and for other people, I just think, in general, keeping you options open is better advice.

We can have a fair difference of opinions on the subject.

kevinhnc I agree with efusco on this one. I admit it, I was one of the those people that put down multiple deposits (2 different dealerships), but I also called and left my name and contact information at about 15 other dealerships. Both places that I had my deposits told me it would be about a 3 - 6 month wait. About 2 weeks after I put down my first deposit I got a call from a dealership in Barstow, CA where I had left my name and contact information. Someone who ordered the Prius 4 months prior decided when it came in they didn't want it so he called me. I told him I would take it and went to pick it up the next day (by the way I must say that it was the best car buying experience I have ever had. I got there at 1:00pm and was out of there with my new Prius by 3:00pm). If I had put down a non-refundable deposit I would have not been able to buy the car, or I would have been out my $1,000 (which I could never afford to do) and would still be waiting. I feel also that a non-refundable deposit only favors the Dealership and never the customer. You mention that you have the price in writing and that is a good thing, but if you Dealership thinks they might get more for the car by selling it to someone lower on the list without the guaranteed pricing there is nothing stopping them from skipping over you and selling it for more to the person lower on the list. I have found that Dealership always look out for number one. Then again I must say that the Dealership where I bought my Prius was kind, courteous and most importantly honest with me from the beginning to the end. But that is the first time that I can say that every other time I have gone to purchase a car it was like going to battle.

Good luck kevinhnc and I hope that everything works out for you and that you get your Prius soon!

I agree, though when you do buy from one of them ( or a surprise available from another) you are morally bound to call the other dealers rather than waiting for them to call you only to hear "Sorry, got mine 2 weeks ago at XYZ Toyota". I get the impression from some of the forums that this is not uncommon.

Personally I think it's bad form to make multiple dealers order a Prius for you if wait lists are short. Not "wrong" per se, but it can be very irritating for the dealer, esp. if say dealer B were to get the thing in just 2 days after dealer A. Certain packages are much less saleable than others to the general public. OTOH, if there's already a great big waiting list, then that's not really a big deal, since they're likely to be able to sell it if they do get it, and if there is a big delay you just get your money back and they could just potentially scrap the order (as long as you inform them).

As for non-refundable deposits, that's bad karma if there already a significant waiting list. You might be waiting for quite some time.

In my case, I picked my colours and package, and put down a deposit in one place, and got my Prius 2004 2 months later. However, I was the first ever to even inquire about it at my dealership (and thus the first to order one). Wait lists in Canada are much lower for some reason. Furthermore, there is only one option package available here above the base model for some reason, so it's pretty hard to screw up the option package.

Well, guys.... its the teen buyer again. I found it! I called all of the dealers within about 50 miles of me and found one that has a BLACK package 9 coming here in 2 weeks or less! It has already been shipped and has been on its way for over 31 days already and he says the person who wanted it took it back and now it is just moving right over here with no one who has placed an order for it. I am going right now to the dealer to SNAG this one RIGHT NOW! I AM SOOO EXCITED 2 WEEKS!!!!

When I bought mine (in Vancouver, Canada), the dealer was mentioning how they handled orders, wait lists and such.

Apparently all of the Toyota dealers in the area put all of their orders into "the system". There's no paper wait-list per-dealership, everything goes into the computer.

The computer spits out reports for the main provincial Toyota distribution center, where they cross-check for duplicate names, orders and such. My salesman found that in one case, someone had ordered a car from 3 different dealers, so they just took the first order and dropped the two additional ones so as not to mess up their ordering/allocation process.

Of course, he may have just been saying this so I didn't go and shop-around at other dealers and try and get my car faster, but seems reasonable.

    Dave.

Well, I went to teh dealer to check up on that 2 week car. It just so happens that they were lying bastards. All they wanted to do was get me in there to say that the car is already allocated to another dealer, and get me to place my down payment. SCREW THEM. I immediately went to teh largest (and nicest) toyota dealer here in south florida, and polaced my $500 down payment for a PRIUS EXACTLY the way that i want it (black, package 9, and toyoguard). My dealer said a couple of months (meaning probably June or July). I just now have to hope for the best. Since i am a first time driver i am very anxious, but I would rather wait and get what I want than compromise for something less.

Also, does anyone have the toyoguard package? I would like to know if it really makes any difference in the noise that you hear from inside the car. I know that the package includes paint sealant and cloth sealant, but i just want to know about this so called "sound shield". Well, thank you. Now I just have to stick it out.... ARGH!

    #1 - we warned you :)
#2 Toyoguard is crap - take your car to a professional sound shop and have them install Dynamat or any # of the other things mentioned on this board in the Audio & Electronics forum (sorry mikepaul :) )

Well, i dont really want it mainly for the sound. I want to get teh paint sealant, cloth fabric sealant, etc. Should i just call the dealer back and say no toyoguard? Will this delay my order if i get toyoguard? IS IT EVEN WORTH THE $600 or so dollars? WHAT SHOULD I DO!

Paint sealant is Toyota's term for wax. Want the fabric sealant? Buy a bottle of toyo-guard sealant at the parts department for $25 bucks after you get your car. Or but some Scotchguard yourself. Take the other $575 and spend it on good wax and some sound-proofing.

It won't delay your order - this is a PIO that is installed in Jacksonville.

I dont need XM radio. I was actually planning on buying a car hookup kit for my ipod which has over 7,000 songs. That is gonna be awesome. I looked up the dynamat solutions and it seems like they have asome really good stuff. I think i am gonna get the xtreme bulk. Is that everything packaged into one box?

You think that now, but the XM is so sweet, whatever you wanna hear any time, it's like having cable TV in your car....how far you gonna have to drive to school? Wouldn't it be nice to check traffic reports in key cities--and weather? Wanna know what's going on in the news? Want the latest songs you haven't had time to download? How bout some romantic music for the date.

I tell you, I'm a believer in XM--your results may vary.

Pete- any auto custom shop can install an aftermarket backup camera for you, as well as tint the windows and a host of other things :)

I'm with Danny on the toyo stuff too- buy a can of scotchguard and be done with it.

    Peace

I just called bestbuy and they said they could line the ENTIRE car with dynamat for about $600 which is just as much as the damn toyoguyard. Then all I have to do is buy the sealant, which is peanuts.

About the backup cam... Will the auto shops be able to integrate the backup camera with the nav screen?
