I've been randomly experiencing this issue with my 2 month old Prius Prime Premium. Even though I'm depressing the brake pedal and power switch the ignition won't start. I have to do it a couple of times to get the car to start. Does anybody also experience this issue? What might be the cause of the issue?
Sounds like a warranty issue. Either brake pedal switch or something else. The car sees something preventing it from READY mode.
There is another thread here about a dead 12 volt battery. Part of the lead up symptoms were trouble starting. Whatever your issue, it should be covered by the warranty.
Perhaps add a delay of maybe 1-2 seconds between the brake pedal press and the power button press. Try not to do them simultaneously.
Is there a "Ready" light indication on the panel somewhere ? This happens to me with my C ALL the time.......if I don't wait a couple of seconds after pushing the brake to hit the "start" button. On the C, I think a green "key" symbol shows up to indicate that all the security checks have passed and it's OK to start.
Post 2 asks about READY light.. I see no other instruction about a delay between pressing the brake & pressing Start.
Could be an issue originated by the combination of low temperatures and a not optimal status-of-charge of the 12V battery. BTW around a week ago the car I was renting (a Ford Fusion hybrid) did the same thing two or three times, OAT around 30 F. Very scaring, expecially when one did not buy the premium road assistance option... however, after cycling several times the IGN ON pushbutton while keeping pressed the brake pedal, the system started.. I could notice because this time the car did not chime and the steering wheel was unlocked.
Update: I changed my key fob and used the spare that comes with it and never experienced the issue. I will keep you posted incase it happened again. Just 2 cents. It's a brand new car and I assumed that both the key fobs have new batteries in them.
they probably do, but who knows how it was abused between the factory and dealership. just change the battery.
If it was a signal detection issue with the original fob, it should have caused the "key/fob not detected" warning light when you pressed the Power button...
It may not be a battery problem at all. That one FOB might just be defective. You have a warranty. USE IT.

see post #13. for a problem like this, you need to do some investigating. test the 12v health, make sure the fob lights up, make sure the brake lights come on when you step on the pedal, etc.
