I saw some video that Toyotas have this OCV/VVTI filter that need to be cleaned once a while. However, seems like Gen2 Prii have this while Gen3 Prii doesn't. Anyone know why the did not include this filter in later model? I am assuming Gen 4 does not have such filter also.
Don't know but a quick look at parts fiche will tell all. Some engines have catch boxes on side of block . Most don't. .
Yes this looks like it's some part for the 2AL type of engine that went in the Camrys and whatnot and I think it has a oil separator box on the side of the block and some rubber things and that and various and sundry other things that would not pertain to Prius ZZ or Corolla but oh well
Anyone got a link for where this filter is located and proof that it can get clogged and needs to be periodically inspected?
For Gen 1 and Gen 2 (that is, the 1NZ engine, also Prius c) the oil control valve filter is easy to access, behind a threaded plug conveniently on the front of the cylinder head (15678A here). For Gen 3 and 4 (the 2ZR engine), you have to really, really want to fuss with the filter, enough to take off the valve cover and the #1 camshaft bearing caps. (The part callout is still 15678A below.)
Thanks for this... Have you ever seen one that was fouled? Seems like primary engine oil filter would prevent this from ever needing to be serviced?
I've never laid eyes on one, period, except in the drawings. I suppose if I were ever tearing into the head for some reason, I would give it a look-see.
That will be very soon for me I will have a gen 3 2013 $270,000 mile engine out with its transmission sitting on the floor for disassembly to look at how bad and nasty the mess is
Thanks for the information. Looks like the filter does exist just that it is hidden inside the engine. And I would think you seldom need to worry about it clogging as they hide it such a way that it's hard to access to be a periodically serviceable part. However, I was asking because I did saw some videos about some very dirty such filter and that it is one of the reason for high gas consumption and other related issues. I did pull the OCV filter out of another Toyota Vios (Yaris sedan) which had this filter. That filter was clean and no sign of clogging for a 12 year old car.
I have a Yaris here too with like 300 some odd thousand on it I have to check it it looks like this thing just screws out of the head.
