New head gasket, now P0340

    LoL no man have you ever even done this in person you can not do that with timing cover off all the bolts on the timing cover should be back on before you put the timing chain tensioner and honestly it’s easier to install tensioner from underneath the car cause you can use both hands specially if you are just changing gaskets trust me I took mine off and on few times and I realized them gaskets are one time use so I put in new one once I saw small leak you will have to go entirely by sound and listen for the tensioner to kick out that’s only on brand brand new tensioner if you using tensioner that was installed you can just put it in and when the engine first starts it will activate tensioner in the first 3 secs I done that too

    It does say to turn it counter clock wise slightly maybe by a tooth or two then clockwise but that’s only on a brandnew tensioner

    When you install the tensioner, it is held in a retracted position by a small hook.

    To release the hook, you need to arrange for that segment of the chain to tighten, so that it pushes on the tensioner, allowing the hook to drop away. That segment of the chain tightens when you put counterclockwise force on the crankshaft, whether the tensioner is new or old.

    Wait, the diagram he posted SPECIFICALLY says to rotate slightly counter-clockwise and check it has become released. THEN it says to rotate it clockwise and check it again.

    The man you just tried to call out is one of the most helpful members of this community. He not only gave his opinion, but he gave evidence that TOYOTA is asking mechanics to do it that way. Stop being a dick.

    Anyways, it is true that you cannot check it with the timing cover off, because that is what the tensioner bolts to, but the way of doing it was correct. I, unfortunately, have to redo the entire job of the timing cover tonight because my Prius won't start and there are a million reasons it could be.

    Just had the same issue, redid headgasket, checked everything going together, hybrid battery drained, now I get the "Check Hybrid System Stop in a Safe Place message with a P0340 code and the 3 seconds of run before shutdown.

    Was it in those tiny rail like tubes? I have the same issue after my headgasket job.
