I can’t figure out how to remove the cup holders in the center. I want to remove the factory USB port and install a dual USB socket that can charge phones. How do you take it apart? iPad ?
Have you considered a dual USB 12v cigarette lighter socket to charge the phones? Plenty of power and no console removal needed. Edit - this is the one I am using. Very reliable, I have one in each car.
I got one of those for $6 and it even offers a high speed USB jack. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Yes I have considered that and I have multiple cigarette lighter chargers. But I don't want to use the cigarette lighter port for that purpose. I have other purposes for it. But seeing how the car has a useless USB port right next to it, I prefer to use that for a useful USB port.
The existing USB port in the Prime has such limited power output that it won't charge my iPhone 7+. Not very useful. Something like this might be a good solution - lots of USB slots and it can be powered from 12 VDC.
Correct. The factory USB port is meant for music listening only, not for charging. I remember trying to charge my iPhone 8 from it and the percentage charge went down! LOL.... For me, it's more about the passengers, kids with iPads, etc. that want to charge whilst getting a ride. I use my wireless charger and I am fine with that. But if anyone has any tips on how to remove the center compartment, please share. I figured out how to remove the back cover of the compartment, it was rather easy, but that doesn't allow me to reach the area where the cigarette lighter is. I need to remove the entire thing.
It will charge, but the rate of charge is very low. It will charge my iPhone 5S and an older iPod, but not the bigger devices that draw more current. I can't find the power spec, but it's not much current out of that port. There is another thread on this forum where a Prime or Gen 4 owner wired up a charging station for multiple USB devices. I don't recall that the console was removed for this, but it may have been.
I wanted to revive this thread hoping anyone can provide ideas on how to remove the center compartment. Thanks. iPhone ?
There are illustrated, step-by-step removal and installation procedures in the Repair Manual (more info), under Vehicle Interior: Interior Panels/Trim: Front Console Box. See also the Accessory Installation Manual link in the second-to-last paragraph of my January posting (#116).
Reviving thread to see if anyone has ever successfully done this. It's 2022 and the 2022 Prius Prime still has a 3.5mm auxiliary jack. I want to replace that USB / 3.5mm part with one that has two USB ports. Will connect the factory / Apple Play USB port to one and turn the second one into an 18W QC3.0 port.
Removing the console was very easy. All you need is a good plastic ply tool. I removed the center console plastic part to wrap it on my 2020PP LE to delete the Piano Black. On LE it did not have Qi charger but had a wire harness in place. But for your purpose, you need to replace the USB/AUX jack. I could not remove that part. Since I was not replacing it with anything, I did not want to force it out ending up breaking the plastic cover. I had to wrap around it with both the USB/AUX jack and cigarette lighter socket in place.
Nice job on that wrap. When you had the console out, did you happen to see if there was a bolt this could be attached to: Arkon Mounts GN092-L28-AMPS Car or Truck Seat Rail Mount a bolt possibly near the end closest to that gap between the console and the front stack with the infotainment screen?
The photo below and three more on this page are my wrap job. I deleted all of PianoBlack to avoid dusting. ORACAL® 975 - Honeycomb Black 070 Premium Structure Cast Film | Opaque Craft Film There are some bolts on the car below the plastic cover. See Photo red arrow. But I don't know how appropriate they are for your purpose. There are a few screws underside of the plastic cover holding the bottom of the cup holders and heated seat switches. See photo below, red arrows. But either way, in order to use any of them for the attachment of your parts, you would have to cut the plastic cover to allow it to come out out of the cover.
Remove the piece indicated by a red arrow first. As far as I can remember, the piece just snapped off with a ply tool. Work from the top, The piece removed.
Just found this part: https://hybridpit.com/dual-usb-port-for-toyota-2-1a-2-with-booster-for-toyota-prius-2016-2021.html Looks like it replaces the USB+AUX jack in the most recent Prius / Prius Prime models. The pictures on the product page might give a clue on how to remove the ports.
