So my ‘07 Prius’s suspend needs a whole list of repairs including the strut, support, lower control arm, lower ball joint, tie rod ends, hub and wheel bearing and also needs an alignment. The dealer is asking 3500 for these repairs.. are there any other repair shops that may do these repairs for cheaper in South Bay California? If so, where can I go? iPhone ?
Yes, the front driver side collided with another car when I was driving back home from work tired with 0 hours of sleep from the night before. I kinda dozed off for a few seconds when I was braking coming to a stop at a red light, when I woke back up I realized I was going too fast to stop in time so I swerved into the right lane and ended up having the driver side of my car hit the car in front of me. iPhone ?
Insurance? If you have to pay out of pocket, I usually use an indy shop and not pay the crazy dealer prices. Do you need to have OEM parts or just aftermarket stuff? It really depends on your car's actual worth to see how much you're willing to throw at it.
No I only I have liability.. I’m not an expert but if after market parts do the job then I’m willing to go down that route. The guy at the dealer said it’s only worth about $500 now.. should I even bother fixing this car up? iPhone ?
Well you have to ask yourself, would $3500 buy you another car? How many miles on the car now and are you experiencing any other issues? Where is it parked? Hopefully in a secure area where nobody can steal the catalytic converter.....high theft item I think it can be fixed for less. You don't need original parts from the dealer. Only concern I have is if you have any frame damage. If the frame is damaged (cross member), it may need some body work before you can do the suspension work. Maybe the dealer gave you some insight? If you do plan on selling it, I would be interested.
The car occasionally doesn’t want to turn on so I would have to unplug and plug back in the battery in the trunk to start my car. This Usually happens late at night (still not sure why it does this). The car is over here at the dealer right now and I’m here still trying to figure out what I am going to do with the car. The fender and door on the driver side are pretty dinged up as well. iPhone ?
Your car doesn't look that bad, I don't think all those parts you listed have damaged. But the exterior of the car would need some work. You can try and source a used fender and a driver's door. But car still looks drivable as it is now. Regarding your car starting issue. You would need to research that a big, maybe it just needs a charge or a new 12v battery?
By unplugging the battery you are probably clearing a malfunction code that car has thrown which in your case may be the Red Triangle of Death which is on your dash. When your car wont start did you see a bright red triangle on the dash? Which may mean the big hybrid battery in the trunk is failing and has thrown a ground fault which is high voltage leaking to ground which is usually a leaking battery module so on top of all the suspension repairs you probably have a bad hybrid battery too. very very common. Was the car getting poor mileage also? Btw, There have a been a few reports of a loud bang and smoke coming from the hybrid battery box when the ground fault nag is repeatedly cleared and continue to drive. This is a module exploding. I would take a guess your miles on the car are in the 190,000 to 230,000 range? Looks like the wheel got hit so hard it busted the mag wheel and the bearing so probably needs a new cv joint too but that impact may have whacked the transmission differential. So lots of buried land mines in a repair such as this. Its ok if the insurance is picking it up but your footing this one so......$$$$$$$$$$
The battery seemed fine when I last checked it, but I will check again. I was able to find a shop that offered a lower price for those same repairs so I’m good on that now. I appreciate your advice! iPhone ?
How do you check the hybrid battery? The reason its cheaper is there using really crappy after market parts. Toyota OEM parts are expensive for a reason.
The red triangle has never popped up, so I’m not sure if that is the case.. I hope not at least. The car has about 132,000 miles on it. iPhone ?
Forgive me for being a noob, but I usually take off the floor cover that covers the spare tire compartment and then unplug the little cord with the white end that goes into the little device in the corner of the trunk.. I’m not sure if that is the battery but that’s what I disconnect when the car doesn’t start. And as far as checking the battery, I usually go onto the dash and do the little short cut that takes me to a screen that shows me the voltage of the battery. iPhone ?
Yes that’s the big wire from the 12 volt battery to the front jump point that will disconnect the 12 volt battery from the car. as far as checking the battery I’m talking about the big hybrid battery. Your hybrid battery is way overdue for failure as low miles are sometimes worse than high miles as it shows the car has not been driven much which is very bad for both battery’s. My 07 had low miles and started to fail years ago. A g2 driven high miles does best in battery dept. Read all the posts on this site. Hybrid battery failure is very very common on an 07. Most failed during Covid from just sitting that kills them. checking the hybrud battery health is easy just watch it’s charging/discharging behavior on the screen above the radio. Which you can’t do now. All im saying is I can guarantee you that you will be dealing with that in addition to your crashed car list so add that to your list and don’t be surprised. Good luck.
