Guy across the street installed geothermal for his mid sized house. Pleased. Bonus he discovered water when the vertical shaft was drilled and now can pump it out and water his lawn without incurring sewage costs. (In my development, water and sewage costs average ~$130 monthly.)

 

My 2010 Prius has been more than awesome but coming to the end of its life. So I've been looking at used newer Prius, but there's also now Camrys and Avalons with the same tech and way nicer features, more space so what's the point in getting another Prius?

 

I looked at a Camry recently - and couldn't get past the "boot/trunk" wasn't as practical as a Hatchback - mine is like a mini-wagon most of the time - just me, with the back seat almost permanently folded. The PRIUS is considerably more economical than the Camry too. But - you're right, the Camry is a better ride.

 

I really hope the new 2023 Prius keeps the versatility of the Gen 2 to Gen 4 .. because really its very practical and fairly unique in the non SUV space.

That's a good point, the Prius can hold a crazy amount of stuff and it's easy to load.

The Prius at least for my driving habit (2010) gets 45MPG tops. So I was comparing that what I saw listed on the Camry's which is about the same. I wonder how repair costs compare?

 

Yeah they’ve killed the Prius v, and the Matrix. Toyota has the golden touch; only a matter of time ‘for their entire stable looks like a bunch of Lexus CUV’s.

 

The Gen 4 is about 15% improved over the Gen 3.

The Corolla Hybrid is offered only in a stripper trim. And I can’t go over the old school gearshift… takes up way too much space on the console.

 

Only in North America. Europe and other markets can get a Corolla hybrid as the hatchback and wagon. Toyota has been trying to consolidate models with the latest Corolla line up.

Again, a NA thing. They are probably trying to keep Prius sales from dropping further, and selling the Rav4 hybrid is better than a introducing a Corolla hatch/wagon hybrid for their bottom line.

Yeah, they could put just about any type of gear shift they want into a car now, hybrid or not. The old style is familiar, and will turn off less people. From the cost perspective, better to have the same cockpit parts for all of the model's options. If it's like the shifter in the Camry, you are getting varying degrees of B for that extra space.

 

The corolla hatchback replaces the matrix. The replacement or substitute for the prius v is the corolla cross hybrid. It should be better in terms of gas mileage and sales than the prius v.

i really like the Lexus UX, which is based on the Corolla. Two turn offs tho. The stupid touchpad interface. And no 360 camera.

as for gearshifts, absolute worst has to be Honda. We rented an Odyssey minivan, and I stared at the console for 30 seconds before figuring it out.

 

I've heard of prospective owners choosing lower trim levels, to avoid/reduce touch pads. Reviewers (Doug DeMuro for one) eschew the awkwardness of most of the touch pads. Car manufacturers love 'em though...

Parents have an Acura, and I like that interface. I admit it takes a moment to figure out when coming from a shifter, but the ergonomics, with the R button being applied in a different direction, are pretty good. It is far better than the push button replacement some have put into their Prius.

 

Seems the same here. For the ICE model though, you also have the choice of; SE, SE Nightshade, SE Apex, XLE, XSE, and XSE Apex. Plus whatever packages those trims have access to. Currently, the public can even choose the L trim for the ICE.

On the UK site there is 3 to 6 trim choices depending on body type. Not only are they are all hybrids, but a choice between 1.8L and 2L one is there for some trims. At the EU site, there are 11 trims for the Sports Touring(wagon), with 7 being hybrid.

In addition the possible reasons I gave earlier for us getting just the one trim of the Corolla sedan hybrid, North America has been a market where Toyota can get the last bit of profit from older technologies. The Corolla here only had a 4 speed for the automatic transmission for years after competitors introduced a 6 speed or CVT. The more efficient valvematic engine didn't arrive here until after the rest of the world got it, and it was only an upgrade option.

It could be argued that Toyota's trim choice for the Corolla hybrid was chosen to limit sales. The LE hybrid has the LE convenience package built in, making the hybrid cost at $1975. Without looking into the feature differences, the LE to LE hybrid difference is $3125. In order to get the hybrid, a buyer has to pass on extra features, and also see pass that large price difference. If Toyota wanted to sell the hybrid Corolla, they could have gone with a higher trim, and further hid the hybrid premium among the extra features costs and profits. Which is what they did with making AWD standard for the Rav4 hybrid here.

 

I like how Honda manuals refer to "positions" when there's nothing to move. Makes me wonder about the designer's favorite flavor of the alphabet.

Out of all the completely unnecessary and gratuitously overthought shifters out there, I find the indexed rotary ones to be tolerable mostly because it's easy to add an accessory that looks like a shift lever.

 

Having a recent Rav4 and Avalon, I like the classic shifters ... lever on the center armrest. Though I also liked the shifter lever on the dash panel. The action and positions are intuitive to someone coming from other cars and so is not intimidating to new to the model buyers. Just like I like a dash behind the wheel (and love HUD) and real switches for important functions. I don't want to be fumbling through some tactile interface let alone a touch screen for safety related things like defrost, wipers, even heating.
