After much looking/waiting to find a decent clean appearing Prius we brought one home this afternoon with 136,000. Anywho. I am interested in what I need to to acquire for code reading, diagnosing etc. Also any words of wisdom on fluid changes etc. I should look into asap. I realize these questions are covered in detail elsewhere but thought this would be a good way to get my feet wet here. I have been researching/reading here for some time. My mechanical background is varied and includes bikes, sleds and racecars to list a few that have cost me large amounts of cash and time Unfortunately my electronic assisted diagnosing experience is next to zero. congrats and welcome! do you know the service history? some info may be available at 'toyota.com/owners', along with a maintenance schedule. all fluids and spark plugs should have been done by now. tech stream is the gold standard prius reader, but dr. prius or hybrid assistant work fairly well. all the best!

Toyota never recommended an ATF change interval for the Prius in the US. No lubricant is forever, so owners are free to make up their own routine. My recommendation would be to change ATF WS now, at 200,000 miles, and then every 100,000 miles. It is a drain and fill, no need to flush as no ATF WS is trapped in a torque converter. The transaxle also lacks clutches and hydraulic shift logic, so none of the old wives tales about don't change high mileage ATF apply, even a little bit. With the car level, open the fill port before opening the drain port. The dealer should have 2 crush washers and 4 quarts ATF WS.
replace pcv valve. its quick and cheap (get one from toyota less than 20 dollars). If yours is gummed up at all from the 138k miles, then itll especially be beneficial
Appreciate the replies. This car came from a small local used dealer who specializes in older Prius models almost exclusively. They had no prior service records but did run it through there in house shop. All fluids were verified to be up to the full marks and at least appear to be in decent condition. The coolants were tested for my area and deemed fine. Irregardless, I plan on changing everything for a fresh start. The PCV valve is on my list. Now I am off to Utoob for some guidance! If service history doesn’t show spark plugs changed by 120k, I’d do those and at the same time PCV valve since it’s right there. Oil, both coolants and transmission fluid all should be checked and changed if not already done so.
In addition to the things already mentioned, I'd add the air filter, cabin filter and clean the throttle body and MAF sensor. Congrats on the purchase by the way.
My local Autozone had one in stock but I'm sure there are online options as well. I'm still trying to support local stores as much as possible. Even my local Toyota dealership has surprisingly fair prices on most parts. The guy that works the counter there will give me the web price which saves me about 10%.
In 2009, I bought a Scangauge II, it has served me well but is very expensive and 12 years old. Modern gear tends to be mobile phone based using OBDII to Bluetooth adapters. Torque Pro (OBD 2 & Car) - Apps on Google Play as an example.

Need a little direction finding a few parts. I need a front license plate holder and hardware is possible. Mud flaps and hardware. Good rubber floor mats front/back and rear storage area. I also need to get a second key/fob working. The dealer tossed in an extra fob that seams the same. Silver symbol fob. My car has the button on the door handles. My functioning fob has the silver symbol. Guessing this is a smart key car? Anyway. Any help is appreciated. I have zero problem buying used parts/components as well. Also. How about a link to the preferred Cat protection plate. Unreal requirement. I plan on using this car for an extended road trip east of the Mississippi and deep south at the tail end of Jan.
