So, I wanted to run this by people to see what they think. I think I have no real recourse as I can't really prove anything but I wanted to see if others had had this experience or something similar.
Last week, I had my 2013 Prius in at my local dealer for it's 100k tune-up. Everything seemed fine, went smoothly in terms of the overall transaction, dropped off on Wednesday afternoon and picked up Thursday afternoon. Here is what is bothering me. I turned my car on after the guy went and fetched it, the cruise control was on, the gas was depleted to half a tank- i had dropped off with over 3 quarters full. Then, it's not washed, they were supposed to do this right when checking it in. The guy goes "let me do this, it will take a few minutes" So then I get my paperwork. the mileage on the check in paperwork says 102215-- now I look at my odometer and it says 102129. I think they took my car on some kind of trip- probably 100 miles round trip, is my best guess, but who knows. I think they may have messed with my odometer as well to conceal it, which seems crazy if it were only a hundred miles. but maybe it was more? I called and they were like, "that would never happen" blah blah, we didn't have the time etc and the guy checking in the car messed up the mileage when reporting to the people in the office. But they had my car for 24 hours, who is to say they didn't take it on trip that night and then drop it off back at the dealer in the morning. Any thoughts? Am I silly for thinking it's odd?

102215 could be a typo or not written or remembered correctly and maybe it was 102115 or even 102125. Then it is 14 or even 4 miles.
Sure, it happens. But without definite proof, what do you do?
You could get a dashcam and next time write down the mileage before you hand the car in (or take a photo of the dashboard).

fooling with the odo is too big a job for that.

lesson learned, check your odo next time, make sure they get it right on the paperwork, check it on the way out.
    i wouldn't lose any sleep

For a prius, that's alot of gasoline they used! Regardless of the mileage, that much gas being gone is more than 15 miles of driving!! Another reason I avoid the dealership when possible.

Even if they drove it enough to burn a quarter tank, there is no way they changed the odometer BACK by 86 miles from what it was when you dropped it off. You are worried about nothing. If the gas is really gone, they could have left it running all night. Some owners have done it but that is also highly unlikely.

My bet is the bill shocked you. The answer is to find an independent shop with better prices.

Yeah, there's nothing I can do now. Just the fact the cruise control was on, was alarming. I already called and spoke with them and they basically brushed me off, saying it wouldn't happen. I guess I shouldn't call it a joyride, technically, since it's a Prius. lol But if I have to go to the dealer again, I'm going to take a photo of my odometer.

Stuff like this does happen though, not only with cars. I've had two instances of it over the years One I was having a camping propane cookstove repaired at a shop because one of the burners wouldn't work. They kept it so long that I went back to get it to use it as it was because I had a camping trip planned and the shop owner didn't have it. It wan't lost, wasn't that big of a shop. Turns out he confessed it was already repaired and he let a friend "borrow" it to use on his camping trip before calling me to inform me it was ready. Not exactly what you would expect.
The other time I left a golf club at a clubfitter to order a different shaft and replace the one that was in it. Again they kept telling me the shaft was delayed and hadn't arrived yet. I needed the club so I went there unannounced to pick it up and use it until the new shaft arrived, The guy at the front desk went to the repair room and couldn't find it. Meanwhile I saw it being used in one of the fitting bays, a fitter allowing a customer to try it out. Front desk guy took it and gave it to me and guess what...it had the new shaft already in it! I took it and left without paying since they told me it hadn't been repaired yet.

*** I agree, I don't think they messed with the odometer but I don't know how easy/hard that would be- But seems unlikely for that amount of miles. The bill was bad.

Two instances of yikes. What is the world coming to that ethics are no longer a thing many people want to concern themselves with?

Does the cruise control stay on in US models? Over here you have to switch it on every time you start the car.
