Tried some DIY sound deadening last weekend.
Took 4 hours to complete 4 doors.
Maybe my expectations were higher; sound proofing not that great.

But a big plus (for me) is OEM JBL system now sounds way better. Bass is strong without the previous resonance and vibration.

    So, overall considered a worthwhile effort. MVIMG_20200920_131032.jpeg IMG_20200920_131617.jpeg IMG_20200920_163130.jpeg IMG_20200920_164357.jpeg IMG_20200920_143743.jpeg

Did you replace the plastic sheet? I have been planning on doing some soundproofing, but I would like to know if the sheet is protective or not.

This is a great start to success... I've found that the part that makes the most difference is pulling out the seats and putting sound deadening under the carpets.

It's a LOT of work to do everything (doors, floors, hatch, hatch panels, etc). In addition, I also use home sound batting insulation that has an R-11 factor and fire resistance and stuffed it where ever I can reach. The combination of mats and batting turned my Mazda 5, which is already a boxy, boomy sounding vehicle, into a basically its own speaker box.

Because I effectively sealed the openings with sound deadening material, I could have done away with the plastic sheet. It's purpose of preventing moisture entry is taken care of by the sound deadening stuff.
However, I stuck the plastic sheet back on the same place to ensure reverse engineering in case I sell the car and the next owner wishes to do so.

I wish I would have too but I didn't have access to one of those meters (apps maybe?). I already had the vehicle apart for headunit and speaker installation and thought, "while you're here".

When I was looking for sound matts, I found there are not a lot of good comparison tests between products. I ended up going with Noico 80 mil as the best bang 4 bux. There are a few before/after with camera microphones, which are OK but, yeah, I'd like to see the numbers too.

Added soundproofing cotton sheet above Sund deadening material. Now can hardly hear passing traffic. Nice.

BUT.. (a huge but).... Sound coming in from floor seems amplified. I know, I know. Need to treat floor.

What have I got myself into??? :) IMG_20200926_144431.jpeg

Lol, all that tire and engine noise bouncing off the ground and amplifying off the chassis as you drive around...

May the doors be what the floors will soon be right?

Nice Job!!! Wondering if you noticed any drop in MPG. How much additional weight would say you added?

Personally, I don't look at the MPG. The way I set up my car does everything opposite to increasing MPG. Hehe. I don't drive long distances much so I guess MPG to me is insignificant in real dollars.

Weight? So far about 30 lbs. Will increase I am sure as I tackle other areas. I expect to put on another 60 lbs of stuff. So, I guess in total eventually about 100 lbs?

I saw one video where they put matting IN the door against the outside sheetmetal and it seemed to make a HUGE difference in the road noise. Have any of you included matting against the outside metal? When he tapped on the door, it was night and day?

I do wonder about how the matting will effect moisture in the door... as in mildew or mold potential.

Yes, I did that to my best ability. Not easy to cover the entire surface.
Yes, it does make a much better sound when tapped after.

I believe it reduces vibration/ resonance a lot and in the process cut out outside noise a fair bit.

All little improvements eventually make a noticeable difference. If you ask me how much difference each makes, I wouldn't be able to tell you though

It is funny, when you have a large stainless steel sink, you do not mat the whole sink, just a large part of it... to silence the noise.

Could you post links to the materials used for this? Thanks!

Sorry, I was going to buy something called mass mat... or a mat with mass to cover the whole sink. The countertop guy explained to me that the heavy material glued to the bottom of the sink was enough.

Yup, same with most other stamped sheet metal assemblies. They want to resonate and buzz. If you add a blob of mass... somewhere... it messes up the resonance of the metal stamping, and vibrations dissipate very quickly.

So with car soundproofing, it helps to understand that you don't need a bunch of coverage, you generally don't want loose fill or batts. They hold moisture and rodents will find it and repurpose it for themselves, and it will then retain and rebroadcast their odors.

Much of the key is just adding mass, somewhere, to each panel. You don't have to cover a lot, but you do need to add a fairly significant amount of mass, and you want it to stick on there properly forever so it doesn't go flapping around creating new problems.

This is why asphalt roofing sheets and rolls have been so successful when used as sound dampeners, and most of the automotive-specific noise reduction supplies are basically just asphalt roofing sheets made in unusual thicknesses.
