Some DIY sound deadening

Did you replace the plastic sheet? I have been planning on doing some soundproofing, but I would like to know if the sheet is protective or not.

 

This is a great start to success... I've found that the part that makes the most difference is pulling out the seats and putting sound deadening under the carpets.

 

It's a LOT of work to do everything (doors, floors, hatch, hatch panels, etc). In addition, I also use home sound batting insulation that has an R-11 factor and fire resistance and stuffed it where ever I can reach. The combination of mats and batting turned my Mazda 5, which is already a boxy, boomy sounding vehicle, into a basically its own speaker box.

Any before and after spl measurement comparison?

 

I wish I would have too but I didn't have access to one of those meters (apps maybe?). I already had the vehicle apart for headunit and speaker installation and thought, "while you're here".

When I was looking for sound matts, I found there are not a lot of good comparison tests between products. I ended up going with Noico 80 mil as the best bang 4 bux. There are a few before/after with camera microphones, which are OK but, yeah, I'd like to see the numbers too.

 

Lol, all that tire and engine noise bouncing off the ground and amplifying off the chassis as you drive around...

May the doors be what the floors will soon be right?

 

Nice Job!!! Wondering if you noticed any drop in MPG. How much additional weight would say you added?

 

I saw one video where they put matting IN the door against the outside sheetmetal and it seemed to make a HUGE difference in the road noise. Have any of you included matting against the outside metal? When he tapped on the door, it was night and day?

I do wonder about how the matting will effect moisture in the door... as in mildew or mold potential.

 

It is funny, when you have a large stainless steel sink, you do not mat the whole sink, just a large part of it... to silence the noise.

Sorry, I was going to buy something called mass mat... or a mat with mass to cover the whole sink. The countertop guy explained to me that the heavy material glued to the bottom of the sink was enough.

 

Yup, same with most other stamped sheet metal assemblies. They want to resonate and buzz. If you add a blob of mass... somewhere... it messes up the resonance of the metal stamping, and vibrations dissipate very quickly.

So with car soundproofing, it helps to understand that you don't need a bunch of coverage, you generally don't want loose fill or batts. They hold moisture and rodents will find it and repurpose it for themselves, and it will then retain and rebroadcast their odors.

Much of the key is just adding mass, somewhere, to each panel. You don't have to cover a lot, but you do need to add a fairly significant amount of mass, and you want it to stick on there properly forever so it doesn't go flapping around creating new problems.

This is why asphalt roofing sheets and rolls have been so successful when used as sound dampeners, and most of the automotive-specific noise reduction supplies are basically just asphalt roofing sheets made in unusual thicknesses.
