Reccomend a shop/person to do engine replacement in SF Bay Area

    Hi everyone,

    My shop recommended that I get an engine replacement after cylinder 1 failed on my 253k Prius gen 2
    Looking at the second-hand car prices ideally, I want to keep my Pri.

    Shopping around for a full engine replacement service, so far found a place in Sacramento, (Denko) They do a swap for 1200$ (rebuilt 140k miles not great) however. Dealership quotes for 7-10k which is not worth it.

    I live in East Bay and hoping to find something closer to me, and leads are welcome

    Could you please tell us more about the cylider 1 failure? (rings wore out, throw a rod, sucked a valve, etc)

    Were there any OBD2 codes reported?
    You may be hard pressed to find a better deal if that includes the used engine and installation.

    Which area of the east bay are you near?

    A couple of questions come to mind. What’s the warranty on the $1200 deal? Maybe the guy knows all you need is a ring job and wants your old engine?

    Engine World in Emeryville looks to have used motors for $750 probably a JDM import with low mileage. They can send it to a local shop for install.

    arts in berkely or luscious garge. I would prefer a good used engine over a “rebuilt”

    Who builds better engines Toyota or Larry’s engine rebuilding?

    Yeah, a seasoned used motor is less likely to fall apart right away.

    Maybe however my engine has 253k on it, so getting a 140k engine doesn't sound like that bad of a deal.

    They reported low compression on Cylinder 1 and said further investigation will just cost more money and labor here is +160$/hr
    So I like the idea of putting a newer engine in. But open for recommendations

    If I end up putting a replacement engine do I have to worry about the next Smog test?

    Someone else suggested them too ( another shop) Thanks for your recommendation.

    Engine World does appear to have 2 bad reviews recently. I was lucky enough to get a good Honda motor that ran like new from there and I sent someone in for an MR2 motor that was also good. These were almost 10 years ago and things can change. They import motors from Japan mostly. I was able to go in and hand pick my motor from 5 of them.

    That would depend on the quality of the replacement engine, and the existing emissions system on the vehicle.

    The smog tech won't know or care about the replacement engine, but will likely look for an OEM catalytic.
