Picking up a battery out of a customer’s Camry hybrid. I know it’s 34 modules instead of 28. Are they the same modules? Like are Prius modules interchangeable? Also is there anyone who has a DIY out there so I can take this battery apart with some guidance? I hear it’s a huge pain to disassemble and reassemble compared to a gen 2 Prius. Thanks!
Same modules, but Camrys tend to be much more aggressive on the modules than a Prius. If I had to choose between a pack out of a Camry and one out of a Prius, I'd choose the Prius. There are a few clips that you may break along the way unless you access them from the backside of the panel and properly squeeze them for removal. If you don't have to reassemble the battery I wouldn't sweat it. You'll eventually figure out which parts need to come off. It is much more of a pain than the Prius for sure. Is the battery already removed? If not definitely be sure to completely unhook the 12v battery before touching the HV system. There are electronics in the HV battery that have 12v going to them even when the car is off. If you skip unhooking the 12v you have a high chance of blowing out something elswe expensive.
Still not a fun job. Again, go slowly. Look for hidden fasteners. You will need some socket extensions and maybe a magnet to better reach some nuts. Do you ever need to reassemble the Camry pack, or can you just gut it and not worry about reassembly.
It needs to go back together. I tore it apart. I was overly confident and didn’t take any pictures. Luckily if need be I have another assembled pack I can reference to put it back together if I have trouble.
Got it back together. It really is nowhere near as bad as people say it is. Camry hybrids are just much more uncommon and therefore fewer are out there which means fewer people have worked on them!
I can do it pretty quickly but I think you can agree that a Gen 2/gen 3 Prius battery is much easier than a Camry.
Would it be appropriate to do a Camry hybrid battery reconditioning and replacement guide for this forum?
*cough* *cough* I suck at reassembling things... I don't pay enough attention (and memorise it all) when I'm pulling things apart. The Hybrid Automotive photos may or may not have saved my butt previously... 2006 - 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid Plug-and-Play Car Harness Installation Instructions
very helpful - however, i have the 2012 , i think there is some generational change, albeit minor, but is there possible the next gen 12-15? version ?-- btw, Will need to clean fan ... and copper bus bars were corroded on edge but not so much in middle where contact is made ( like prius) - wondering, do i need to pull the hybrid computer and check the pins and board as well as carefully ohm out the Vsense cable ? i get the feeling the same quality that was in the 2nd gen prius is also used in the camry, just bigger battery pack ...
I wholeheartely agree: The camry HV pack (2012 maybe worse than the previous gen which ended in 2011) has a hell of a shield, it is well built but just lots of extra bolts , nuts and provisions to prevent 'easy' removal .. and u have to use the safety breaker to undue some of the screw holders (kind of clever safety provision)
lol i do this a lot.... pays off most of the time... others i have to become a YouTube Certified Mechanic
