I removed a complete engine/transaxle assembly from a junkyard Prius. It appears the car was broken into and the hybrid battery was stolen. Additionally, the engine seemed to have good compression in all cylinders when turning through 2 revolutions of the crankshaft. However, I removed all 8 bolts in an attempt to separate the engine from the transaxle and these sections don't seem to be easily separated. Any hints on getting them apart after the bolts are removed?
Just for posterity: there's a small indent on the edge of the flange between engine and transaxle, at the underside. @Ragingfit speculated (very likely correctly), that it's purpose is for a pry bar or cold chisel. He used it thus and broke the bond without too much drama.
THanks I remember in the video. Are you aware of any walkthrough for transmission removal or should I Make one when I take this on. I have done some research and have found that transmissions for sale on ebay most seem to have the front mount removed I suspect from a good intact carl so normal removal others I suspect front end damage and front end cut out or removed hence all mounts in place, but just speculation on my part
Haven't seen one. I'd speculate the easiest way is to pull the engine first, then start the same procedure as you'd do fro replacing a front/left wheel bearing, pull the drive shaft out, go from there. I've never done anything remotely close to that ambitious, but does that stop me speculating...
I think it can be done without engine removal at most engine mount removal to allow for maneuvering. I wonder what ChapmanF would suggest
paging @ChapmanF If I'm not mistaken, the engine free-spans from the passenger side mount to the transaxle? I think if it was disconnected from the transaxle, and that mount, it'd be in free fall? Well not quite, dangling off the exhaust??
good point I will need multiple floor jacks. I think once everything is disconnected and the front mount removed I think the trans can be angled to fall forward and to the left letting it come out from the bottom.
Any updates? I'm going to have to replace the transmission input damper in my 2010. Guess right now is most efficient way to do is to drop the transmission out, leaving engine in place. ...and if in purchasing a transmission you end up with an extra transmission damper (as in the photos you attached) I might want to purchase.
Swapped my trans. I had to remove the engine to do it. I would just get a damper off eBay as the one I removed is weak.
I don't recall which mounts I removed. I do recall that the driver side top one created an issue. It's possible that I cut this but I think I was able to remove the nuts/bolts.
