Meaning if I do nothing but test the cells based on resting voltage, replace the bad one's, then use Pro Long to balance the pack? I would prob go one step further and do the 2-min load test after documenting the rested voltages. As follows..

    - Remove pack from car (not allowing car to start, pack has been resting for over 6 months)
    - Measure voltage on each cell and document
    - Perform 2-min load test and document
    - Come back to this thread and post my results ;)
    - Replace the bad cells
    - Balance with Pro Long system
    - Come back here and post Pro Long numbers

    Would that about cover it?

    Yes,
As a DIY approach to balance doing a decent job with a reasonable amount of effort.

Let me know when you are ready to buy some modules.

I have a rather strange case.
Cells checked for a "light bulb" and discharging it to 6.5V indicated a capacity between 4300 - 5200 mAh.
However, after charging and discharging by the charger gave about 1000 mAh.
Have You met with the cells suddenly for no reason "dying"?

well dammit. today my 2006 which has been nearly flawless for 200k just threw pa080 and 3013. looks like the battery must be done. im thinking i should get a new battery, unless perhaps a gen 3 uses the same battery? it seems like a lot of work to replace a few cells only to repeat the process as the oe cells die. where can i get the best price for a genuine new battery?

The gen 3 (and Gen 4 NiMH) uses modules that can be transplanted into your case. If you can find a 5 years or less battery from a wreck then that is a good way to go.

The best price for a new OEM is best done by researching the online prices of your closest dealers. Toyota Parts Center Online seems to work well.

I will add if you are DIY and cannot find a a pack from a junked Prius is @2k1Toaster kit of new cells from newpriusbatteries. That basically gives you a new pack for $1600 delivered. The link is in my signature.

Well... Here I am, again. The car has been sitting now for 18 months in the garage, not started the entire time. I just have not had time to deal with the car (it's a project at this point). I went out yesterday and charged the 12v battery, it's good. I tried to start the car, but nothing happened ("check hybrid system"). I assume the traction battery has completely died and can't start the engine?

I may have some time over the next couple of weeks to pull the pack, but after allowing the pack to sit for this long, is it even worth it? And if so, what type of voltage should I be looking for in each cell? I suspect is the pack is discharged I won't see anything above 7v? (if any at all).

I never did order the Prolong charger, they were out of stock during the pandemic last year. I think they have them in-stock now. But I suspect the rebuild strategy you outlined above could change now that my pack is discharged?

    Thanks!

Most of the modules will still be above 7.3 volts.

I pulled the battery (again). Opened it up and tested every cell (after the many months of resting voltage). I had 9 or 10 cell showing under 7v (many below 6.5v). Also the nuts and bars were very corroded (even thou I cleaned them real good the last time).

Anyway.. I'm done with the pack. I called Green bean to ask a few questions and ended up scheduling an install. They came out the very next morning and installed the reman battery. The car came back to life again.. full battery and great power. The new battery charges up quickly and I can sit now with the AC running for a good while without the engine running, something I could not do before. It feels like a brand new battery, even thou I know it's not. But for $1700 and some change, installed, I'm pretty happy with it.

I spent hours researching Green Bean batteries (every single post I could find on here and other places). Overall, they have great reviews and stand by their batteries. I do have some indirect experience with them, from a person know who had a Green Bean battery installed in his Prius. He is going on almost 2-years and says the battery is doing great, no issues. Also, the independent installer who installed my battery says he has 110k miles on his Green Bean battery (on a 2nd gen Prius, with over 300k miles).

I looked into purchasing a new OEM battery from Toyota. The Camry battery is much higher than the Prius battery. I found a few Toyota dealers online selling them for around $3500 + core. The cheapest I found was $2800. But there is a catch... The warranty on the pack is only valid if installed by a Toyota dealer. Not sure what the install fee would be, but I did not want to get involved with a dealership. And no way I am spending that kind of money without a warranty.

Green Bean offers a lifetime warranty, so that appealed to be. If the battery goes bad, they come out and put a new in. A few folks on here consistently tell folks not to use Green Bean, saying the lifetime warranty will not be any good when they go out of business, or the batteries will fail, etc.. But I overlooked all of that. Also of note Green Bean was just bought out by LKQ Corporation (a fortune 500 company), so I think it's safe to say Green Bean isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

I say all of that with only having about 20 miles now on the new battery. Time will tell. I will update in a few months. Thanks to everyone here who helped me over the pass couple of years!
