In the looking stage for New Prius Prime but few questions maybe someone can help

One of the problems about carrying a spare tire in a Prime is the lack of a dedicated place to stow it when it's not needed; the oversized battery requires more space than an ordinary Prius. Either behind the front seat or in the back takes up some of the limited cargo space. And, a spare needs to be strapped down so it doesn't fly through the car if someone hits you. People have used either Corolla or Prius full sized wheels & tires or compact spares. The car comes with a jack and tools, and with a small air compressor and a jar of tire sealant. That is no help if the tire has a bad slash. I switched to Bridgestone DriveGuard run-flat tires, and they're OK. No punctures yet, and they drive good. These tires are claimed to be good for 50 miles at 50 mph without air...and by then they're junk. We've been very pleased with our Prime in all other regards.

 

and on top of that, the prime has 3" higher deck than reg prius due to battery.

PP cargo space is smaller than Gen3 for sure, but if you only have two passengers in front, then you can get good use of folded rear seats for cargo space. As commented above, there is no underdeck space to store a compact spare. I almost never use rear seats for people, so the rear seats are almost always folded. I carry a full-size spare behind a front seat. It is wedged in tightly so that there is no need to strap it. BTW, PP never had a spare tire. Most of Gen4 Prius now has no spare, but at least for regular Gen4 (not eAWD) has storage space for a compact spare.

There a
re several cars available without a spare now. I don't know of any BEV with one, and most PHEVs don't either. The Rav4 Prime is the only one I know of with one.

The compressor is listed as something like tire inflation repair kit. It has a jar of sealant goo attached to it. It sounds like these factory supplied compressors can't be used without using the goo, and replacement goo from the dealer can cost almost as much as a new tire.

For slow leaks, and small holes, I have a tire plug kit and needed tools in the car. Will need a decent compressor as part of the tools. If doing a tire plug isn't something you want to do on the side of the road, there are aftermarket goo compressors available that can be used as a basic compressor. Plus, the replacement jars of goo are cheaper.

As for getting a new car, why are you looking now? This is probably the worse time to be buying any car. It sounds like your Prius is in good enough shape to wait out the current market conditions.

How has the fuel economy been affected by the tires? Run-flats are heavier, and that weight is going to the worse spot to add it on a car.

 

May I ask if we use the goo, is it required to take the tire of the rim to clean up the sealant & patch it properly?
Can other tire shop do this cleanup? If so, how much does it cost roughly?

I hope you got your Prime! I've owned my 2018 Prime Advanced for a month now and have determined it is the best car I have ever owned! I found it at Carvana. My 2010 Prius was needed some expensive repairs so I searched offers for it. I had bought and sold a few cars with CarMax and did not consider anyone else when dealing. In April, I traded the Prius for a 2019 Rav4. What a shock going from 50 mpg to 24. So in October, we decided to get rid of the Rav4. Going back to CarMax, I got stuck with an inexperienced sales person - which turned out to be a good thing. I was working on getting a Prius Prime from NJ to Florida and the time it was taking gave me the chance to rethink dealerships. I went to Carvana's website and submitted my info about the Rav4. Here is the part that is fantastic - Carvana offered me $3K MORE than I paid for the Rav4. We had decided we wanted to go back with the Prius. I researched and discovered the Prius Prime models. With the equity I had in it, that allowed me a $9K down payment on another car. I found a Prime Advanced with 15K miles for $27K. I grabbed it !! Two small scratches but otherwise, showroom condition. I drove to Orlando and did the "vending machine" thing and wow - what a production. Anyway, as of yesterday, we have had the Prime one month. When getting it home the first day, I filled the tank up and made note of the day and mileage. As of yesterday, we've had the car one month - driven it 921 miles and used ZERO gasoline! Loving it!! I installed the cord charger semi-permanently in the garage and also installed a wall switch to power the outlet the charger is plugged into. That way all I do is plug the car in and flip a wall switch and it starts charging the car. It takes about 5.5 hours to charge the battery from totally drained but so far, that has not been a problem. We've never charged outside the home although there are plenty of charging stations - and some are free (like the one in front of Kohl's Department Store). Anyway, we LOVE the Prius Prime and my next car (if ever) will be a newer model of this car. I hope you got yours and are loving it, too.

 

i keep a spare in the back when on trips. locally, triple a is good enough, or call a friend

 

yeah the ravs have been overpriced everywhere. supply and demand i guess. i wouldn't pay over msrp either.

 

I love my 2021Prime LE, but it definitely has less space to put my stuff than my 2005 Prius.
