i have a 2014 prius plugin base model. after working from home and not driving for 1+ years, the 12v battery is officially dead. i watched a youtube video and it seemed like an easy DIY.

is there anything that i would watch out for?

where did you guys buy the replacement battery?

    thanks.

i replaced mine 2 years ago, so about the same age as yours when it died.

i got an oem at the local dealer for $200. + tax at the time. there are several models that fit, but nothing so inexpensive that made me think twice.
over the years, i have gotten good service from 3 oem's.

nothing to watch out for, take a few pics of where everything goes as you disconnect the old one so you'll have a guide if needed.
disconnect the negative first, and reconnect it last. be careful not to let the wrench touch anything when working on the positive.
try not to drop anything down below, and you might lose radio presets and window memory, although i didn't.
if the windows act funky, just hold the switch all the way down, then all the way up to reset.

you can put a 12v source on the jump point if you don't want to lose anything.

    all the best!(y)

When I replaced my 2010's OEM 12 volt battery with an Optima Yellow Top, I found, regardless of the dimensional spec's being identical, the height was "slightly" higher, maybe 1/16". That was enough to throw off the super-finicky Toyota hold-down bracket design, and I needed to add a shim washer, to get everything seated.

Yeah, deal with ONE CABLE AT A TIME, neg first when removing, and last when installing. Don't go nuts on the cable clamp bolts when tightening, just fairly firm with one hand, on a wrench or ratchet. Doesn't hurt to run a battery brush through the clamps, and maybe a little fine sand paper around the posts. And if you've got a smart charger (3~4 amp rating), run it through a charge session.

If you want to avoid losing the trip meters, radio presets etc, look into memory savers. I use a jump pack with a special cord that runs to the OBD port. I've also use a very low power, simple trickle charger in past, worked also. It's no big deal though.

Is this the same battery that's used in other Prii like our v?

If so I got my LiFePO4 from eBay. Almost 3 years now, on the 14th. Hope to update my thread on it next year I'll try to skip this year...

Here's a good set of videos on battery replacement.

My battery is still working well with no issues, but I bought a tester for another vehicle and decided to use it to test my PiP 12v battery. The tester requires that you input CCA and battery type. The yellow label on the top of my battery specifies 325 CCA so that's clear enough, but what about battery type? Is this an ordinary "flooded" battery or an AGM (tester allows for 'flat plate' or 'spiral' AGM)?

It's AGM but not spiral type. The spiral types have cylindrical cells and look like a 6 pack.

    Thank you!

So what exactly is it about these batteries/vehicles that explains such a long battery life? Most batteries in the vehicles I've had are lucky to go 4 years maybe before needing replacement...this one is going on 10. Is there something about the hybrid function/performance that makes a difference....location in rear of vehicle where less subject to temp swings, or ?

actually, they have a pretty bad rep for short lifespans, but the pip has the advantage of charging the 12v along with the hybrid battery when you plug in.

The AGM batteries are said to have twice the lifespan of regular lead acid (flooded) batteries due to resilience against deep discharge and vibration. The acid is in a paste like substrate which even if the case is broken it does not leak out. (I've had probably the only Mercedes Benz brand battery in existence that exploded with a giant hole on me when I was trying to start my car).

In the Prius as I understand the car only uses the 12V energy to wake up/power up electronics after which the huge HV battery actually powers the starter to crank the engine. No deep discharge event whenever the engine is started.

Deep discharging whether it is quick due to cranking amps to turn the engine over or due to listening to your radio without the car in READY/engine running is what eventually does the batteries in.
