Also, you can find Toyota OEM charging cords cheap on eBay. You do have to watch for the good-priced one because some sellers are asking way too much Buy It Now price for it. If you don't mind a used one, I have an extra one for sale. PM me if you are interested.

 

I found a Ford J1772 protocol cord on Facebook marketplace for $20.

I keep that one in the car and the Toyota cord always plugged in at our house:



Works well.

 

Craigslist has them too.

YOu don't have to be a "member" to look at what is posted on Facebook.......in the "public" areas.

THEN.....are the actual wires pulled loose from their connection.......or is just the plastic/rubber strain relief pulled apart ??

An electric motor shop or an independent hybrid mechanic likely could fix your old one.
You might ask your Toyota dealer about a repair too........but the odds of that are about ZERO.

 

Although I think you'd be best served by buying a used EVSE charging cable or buying an after-market cable of similar design, you can repair your existing OEM Toyota cable by replacing the J1772 connector.

Replacement connectors are not inexpensive, but probably much less costly than ordering that $900 EVSE from Toyota.

For example, Amazon has one (B08XWD2XHX) for about $95:

I suspect that replacing this connector is not much more difficult than replacing any power cord connector. There are five individual wires which are the two power conductors and the three other conductors which handle the signalling between the car and the EVSE.

Also, the damage your son's colliding with the cable may be covered by your comprehensive insurance just as if he had rammed into the side of the car and bashed in the door -- or if you car had been hit by a wayward shopping cart rolling across the parking lot at your local supermarket. Keep in mind, however, that you'd still be responsible for the "deductible" portion of the cost and the claim could result in your having to pay higher premiums in future years.

As I posted a while back:

The J1772 connector is engineered to be extremely resistant to damage. The SAE spec provides:

Receptacle and cord plug

– Specified to comply with international standards including:

• J1772™
• IEC 62196
• UL 2251
• Electrical safety

– 10,000 cycle life with exposure to dust, salt and water

– Vehicle drive over does not expose a hazard

– Sealing
– Corrosion resistance
– Touch temperature limits


Also worth noting is that the J1772 standard provides that there is no charging voltage present at the connector until the connector is plugged into the vehicle and the vehicle signals the EVSE that it's ok to energize the cable/plug assembly. (Is the toggle switch shown in the impromptu repair being used to over-ride this safety feature?)

But I guess nothing is unbreakable.
