I've been working on the hybrid battery and didn't take notice of the
rubber tube (attached photo) near the 12V battery - can anyone tell me
    what it's for ?

That's the vent for the 12 volt battery.

The end shown free there (with the ribbed nylon 90° fitting) should be plugged snugly into a matching hole in the top cover of the 12 volt battery, on the side. If the battery vents any products of charging, they go through the hose and out of the car.

The charging products usually of concern are H₂, which I'm not aware of posing much of a toxicity problem, though there is an explosion problem if it accumulates in a confined space, and H₂S, a very definite toxicity problem even in small amounts. (If any liquid vents out of the 12 volt battery, it contains H₂SO₄ and will eat away at the body metal.)

Thanks, looks like I need to better document/photo what I'm doing. I only see the one hole
on the Yuasa battery but the ribbed end of the hose does not fit (it is larger than hole) or it's broken. Is that
ribbed end a standard part to buy at Toyota or something from the hardware store ?
