Compatibility of Extension Module versions (86100-YY050)

Wonder if you ever figured this out..have a similar question regarding extension box 861-YY050 and different pt numbers. Also wonder as per a post on Toyota Nation whether this box has much if anything to do with Bluetooth (which is all I really want for phone..don't use apps or navigation). A poster there noted that he got his bluetooth to by bypassing the extension box that was faulty. Ever heard this...can't find anywhere that explains exactly what the box has to do with bluetooth...such Toyota secrets Thanks and be well if you see this. Rick

Note that the extension box has a separate software version. You can find the diagnostic screen:

Someone posted it on this forum but the diagnostic screen on the radio is very easy to pull up:
- Switch the car to on or auxiliary, hold down the car button on the head unit and cycle the parking lights on and off 4 times rapidly.
- A diagnostic menu will pop up on your radio.
- Click on the function check / setting then vehicle signal and you can see your battery voltage.
- Click on the (software versions?), and the screen will display the SW version info of both boxes.

On that Diagnostic screen, you can see the software version of the main unit, and the expansion box. I think it says the main unit is made by Panasonic, and the extension box is made by Harmon Kordon. If you are lucky, the Toyota part numbers will be displayed as well. My wife has the car today, or I would check for you, and post a picture.

Also, I am surprised that the Bluetooth would be affected by a bad expansion box. When upgraded from a 57010 unit to a junkyard 57011 unit, I discovered they had not included the cable that joins the two boxes. While I waited for the cable from Amazon, I seem to recall that Bluetooth still worked without the cable, even if Entune / Nav did not. It makes sense that if the 57010 unit (no Nav; No Entune) supported Bluetooth, that the 57011 unit without the expansion box would still support Bluetooth.

I am now considering doing the upgrade from 57011 to the 510057. I am curious how you made out with that "Facelift", and how much it cost to get the 510057 unit.

As part of looking at parts to upgrade my 57011 to 510057, and I learned something interesting. The lowest cost for a "86100-YY050" is about $180 on eBay (most are $200 or more). The "86100-YY050" is used in many other Toyota Vehicles of about the same age (Carolla, RAV4, regular Prius, and others), and those Harmon boxes are now failing. Replacement boxes are like gold on eBay.

Then I noticed something. As of today (Aug 10th 2021), a compete 57011 with the Harman box and cable can be had for $139 on eBay: seller has 100% feedback, 5 units remaining 2012 2013 2014 Toyota Prius Radio Receiver AM FM XM HD Radio CD Player 57011 | eBay. Swapping the whole 57011 unit would take less effort and cost less than buying just the Harman box. You then might have an extra cable, which you can sell on eBay (or post here as a for Prius V specific item).

That said, once I upgrade my 57011 (with a working Harmon box and cable) that unit will become available for sale. I still have my 57010 that came with my 2013 Prius V two, so I won't need the 57011 to swap back in when I get rid of the car.

 

I have upgraded, so the fully functional 57011 is available as of Aug 26th 2021. The new unit was missing the mounting brackets, so those brackets are not included.

- Have you tried the software upgrade to 5.2.x of the Panasonic head unit? If that works, it costs you nothing. It has worked for some people. A 2012 Prius V would have the original software. All you need is a blank thumb drive. There are instructions and a download link in this forum.

- The whole unit is pretty heavy, so shipping is likely to be ~$30. I need to think how much I want for it.

- I did find someone selling a tested Harmon box on eBay for $129 + $15 shipping. 12 13 14 Toyota CAMRY SIENNA PRIUS RAV4 Bluetooth Module Gracenote Extension Box | eBay That seller is even including the cable, which cost me $30 to buy new. You already have one, but it is nice to have as a spare.

- If you are not in a hurry, watch ebay for a 57011 unit that is missing the cable connecting the upper half to the lower half. You might get a good best offer price if you find one of those.
