OEM Cross Bars / Roof Rack

Anymore feedback on, MPG, wind noise and car wash with these?

 

About 2-3 mph lose with them on the car! Worth removing when not being used, for sure!

At first I didn't mind the wind noise, but after a while it started to annoy me. It becomes noticable above around 45 mph. At 65 to 70 mph it is a considerable whistling racket.

 

I am thinking about buying a set. I noticed there are two types. The 150 lb capacity and some lower profile bars for the same price with a 100 lb capacity. Has anyone tried the 100 lb bars out?

I'm looking to sell my brand new, never used crossbars. If you're interested let me know. I'm moving soon, and I don't want to take them with me.

 

why remove them. They look great and the mileage difference is negligible. plus, if you ever pull into a homedepot and decide, hey I need some lumber today, just keep some straps in the back...

 

Just installed the OEM crossbars. The wind noise people speak off sounds like wind buffeting at highway speeds. It doesn’t sound bad at all.

The drag and “slowness” when accelerating beyond 65 mph is really obvious compared to driving the day before without them on (due to science!).

It only takes less than 5 minutes to remove the crossbars and ~20 mins to put them on the roof properly. The supplied torque limiter Allen key is something you want to keep in the glove box.

 

Bumping an old thread--does anyone know the how long the useable area of the OEM crossbars are from one side of the roof to the other? I'm looking at buying a pair to carry a canoe on the roof of my Prius but want to make sure they're wide enough.

Our slightly used 2020 Prime Upgrade (5075km when purchased) had the OEM racks on it. We drove from Montreal, Quebec to Waterloo, ON on both the secondary highways and the 407/401. Maybe a bit of noise at 125 km on the 407 but nothing to write home about. I did take them off in Waterloo for the trek back to Winnipeg, Manitoba, but I was more concerned with FE, but these are pretty slick so fe drop would've been negligible.

 

Finally talked to one dealership and was able to find the part number: 90467-06207

 

This is probably a seriously dumb question for people here, but I’ve never had crossbars before so hopefully someone can help me out.

-How would I carry 2x4s on these crossbars without them slipping forward and back?

-Further, what accessories are available for these things? How do I know what fits?

But, primary question for my immediate needs is the one about the 2x4s. Have a small project to tackle at home and would like to use my Prius.

 

Cargo tie downs, straps, bungee cords, or good old fashioned rope.

But by your question, I'd be a little sceptical that you would be able to secure the load using the above methods properly, and securely.

Improperly secured loads can fall off the vehicle causing damage to vehicles following you, injury and death. So take it seriously and get someone who knows what they are doing to help you.

Depending on the length of the 2x4 lumber and the quantity, you can fold down the rear and front passenger seats and transport up to 8ft long lumber inside the Prius.

Lol. I get the response and don’t take offense to it. However, I’ve used tie downs plenty of times (was a Z71 owner prior to Prius). I’ve just never had a situation where I was strapping to the top of a vehicle on bars that only run side to side. It seems like that would leave too much motion when braking and accelerating if it was just simply tightened and secured with ratchet straps. Maybe I’m just overthinking it.

 

The roof racks don't have a very good weight rating, put too much weight on them and you risk denting the thin sheetmetal. And, as you stated, the top heavy loads also can put extra force on the roof rack when subjected to acceleration forces whenever the vehicle changes speed or direction.

As mentioned earlier, put the load in the car. Then you don't have to worry about overloading the roof or rack. You will need to worry about the load shifting inside the car though.

Yeah. For this project I would do that. But I just want to learn how to use these bars since I have them. I installed a trailer hitch for my bikes but I’d like to use the bars for cargo and other stuff on trips.

As for the lumber, I was just curious if it was possible, and if so which tie down pattern would actually secure it. Maybe that would have been the better way to word the question.

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone tried to mount these on Prius III 2014. I’m aware that these racks are for 2018 and up, but I found a nice deal locally and I wanted to see if it’s possible to mount them on my car without too much modification.
