I have a 2013 Toyota Prius plug-in. I bought it around 4 years ago. They said it had an EV range of 15 miles. Since I bought it used I guess there was already wear on the battery. When I would plug it in to charge I would only get between 11-12 miles a charge sometimes 13 miles. Is there a way to increase EV miles for a charge? How come it’s never consistent the miles I get after a charge.
ev range is just like mpg. you rarely get what the sticker shows. they were lying about 15, 11 was the sticker. now you can get 15, but it all depends on climate, geography, driving style, acceleration, speed, stops and starts, tires and etc. currently, in our nice weather, with good tires, no hvac, 23mph average speed few stops and starts, flat ground slow acceleration, i'm getting 14. the number you see on the dash is just an average of past driving. only an indicator of yournext drive if it is similar. unfortunately, the only way to increae range beyond that is to trade up to a prime
Your 2013 plugin is Toyota s first generation plugin Prius. 10-15 miles per charge is considered normal. The reason the EV mileage any of us get with our plugins varies is due to the a pretty big number of variable we experience when driving. Variables like the weather, (temperature, wind speed and direction), speed (the faster you drive the less EV miles typically get traveled per charge)<- driving into a strong headwind at a higher speed will reduce EV range even more where as driving slower with a strong tail wind will usually give a nice boost to EV range -, topography (flat, hilly, mountains all give different EV range results), amount of traffic like driving in during rush hours, etc, etc, etc.... The second generation Prius Plugin the Prius Prime has a rating of 25 miles per charge. Some reports here at priuschat say they typically get more than 25 miles per charge and some reports say they typically get less. Like most everything else, EV range with a prius plugin depend on a lot of things. Most every prius plugin owner I've ever met, hopes that the next generation, Gen2 Prius Prime will get more EV range and better efficiency from the gas engine too. Some I've read are impatiently waiting for a Toyota EV model.
Echo above, mine new was listed at 11 miles EV. If you're getting that much, it would indicate that there is very little degradation thus far which is about what I experienced with 150k miles. The only way to increase EV range is to add a bigger battery. The cost would likely exceed just buying a another PHEV like the Prius Prime that comes with more EV range to begin with.
"They" who? That isn't what the Monroney window label or EPA ever said. Here is what the EPA says now (maybe slightly reduced from the original?), your typical 11-12 miles fits this well: For the same reasons that gasoline mileage changes from trip to trip and tank to tank.
Vehicle is designed to use both engine and battery together... Overusing your EV mode will shorten the lifespan of your battery pack. But if you plan on replacing it and you get a NexPower Energy pack you will as much as double your EV range, but again, overusing EV mode is gonna lead to way more hassles in the long run and saving up for an electric car is a better option.
