I just got a Prius LE last week and got 65mpg on the first tank. The display showed exactly what the mileage and gallons used did, exactly 65mpg. Am I lucky or is this normal?
You are lucky. It probably won't last. If it does last, you will be extremely lucky as 65 MPG is ridiculously high.
For fourth gen just modestly high? One thing, Toyota tends to “BS” on the dash displayed mpg. Can’t seem to help themselves. Historically anywhere between 5~10% optimistic.
congrats and welcome! the display is a few mpg optimistic, but very achievable depending on route, climate and driving style.
Good figure. As others have suggested, use a calculator/spreadsheet/long-division with the actual figures. Or use FUELLY. AND - first fill will often be fictitious. Was in my last 3 cars too.
I've been averaging a little over 62 on my 16 four touring for the 6 months I have had it. It probably isn't exactly accurate but I'm not interested in knowing if it is or not, just enjoying it. Whatever it is, I know I don't buy gas very often.
65 mpg is probably doable if you're watching it and using all the mpg tricks religiously, but 50 - 55 mpg is more realistic for "normal" driving. I get closer to 44 mpg when I'm driving it "fast" and zipping it around for a week etc.
That seems maybe a little on the high side, but of course it depends on what kind of driving you do. In my experience the MPG's increase as the tires get worn down. I was getting 60-65 when tires were getting old, but more like 55-60 when tires were newer. Also my replacement tires have never matched the MPG performance of the OEMs. Sweet spot for good MPG is if your drives are longer than say 10 miles (first mile or 2 is always lower and holds down the average), not highway driving at 70+ MPG, and not a lot of stop and go or frequent long waits at traffic lights. But if you are in a more rural area and a lot of your driving is 45-60 on secondary highways, you can definitely get up there in the 60s
I was surprised by the jump in mpg when I went from a 2014 to a 2021XLE. Average was about 46 in my 2014 and after 25,000 miles in the 2021, the lifetime average is over 58 mpg. I could push the '14 to just over 50mpg but have have had several tanks in the upper 60's with the 2021.
I have a 22 LE as well. Prius reports I get around 58-65MPG on average. I say _Prius_ reports because I am dubious on the accuracy of what the dash claims. Maybe it's trying to fuzz with the numbers with eMPG calculations...I'm not sure, but I'm currently recording the gas tank to get a more accurate estimate (just need to wait until my next fill up...which might be a while )
Hi there Phil, Nice work with your first tank whether it was actually 65 a smidge higher or a smidge lower. My take on the question of is 65 mpg normal, is that it quite possibly could be normal for you. FL can present optimal conditions for extremely high mpg the way Prius is setup. Temps around 80 F to 90 F and dry conditions are when our Prime is most efficient. So I'm not as pessimistic as some others concerning the displayed mpg, calculated mpg and that they matched. Keep in mind that letting the Prius sit in the FL sun for a few hours can start to get the battery temps in the caution zone and the A/C can only start cooling those traction pack battery temps above 100 F significantly after a fairly long drive, in my estimation from what I've seen on really hot summer days.
