"it wouldn't surprise me if a respectable number of anti covid vaxxers were blood donors" #4590.

Well, it would surprise me. But we shall never know in this context. Blood samples used were anonymized (of that we can be sure). If Red Cross asks about vaccination status, they could not send it along with.

You can bet your boots that Red Cross cannot ask whether people are 'inclined' to take COVID vaccine in blood-donor screening. That would be a firecracker or (insert explosion metaphor here).

Closest thing we have In Real Life is that convalescent plasma donation is a thing, and at least one such donor posts here.

My download is 'in work' but Nature puts their money in places other than big server pipes :) 49 minutes left...........

Meanwhile, I'll bet my boots that authors had discussions with antibody manufacturers before this manuscript got in the pipeline. Thus, that mice or whatever are being trained to pump out this antibody.

Which finally leads to an interesting question: Do those reluctant to vaccinate, happily flip to antibody injections, after they get hospitalized? Florida situation suggests they do.

admittedly, i need it dumbed down through a decent science journalist.

wouldn't it be amazing if this disaster led to a cure for the common cold?

Perhaps it might be more useful to viral load sampling sewage?

'Interpreting' by science journalists (kinder than dumbing down) is a commendable activity. So long as they do not over reach in search of clicks. It fills a large role for those not nerds, and for those not determined to ignore the previous century and this one. So, bring it on. More please.

If the new uber antibody is widely effective against corona viruses, that's plenty good. If it cures the common cold by also working against rhino viruses and coxsackie viruses, that would be amazing.

#4602, there were 4 hamsters :) and a massive amount of supporting work. Much more work will be needed in animal models before Antibodies Inc. has an injection to sell you.

    But they totally could.

Ivermectin(TM) could be used to treat many people in Africa with river blindness and and other parasitic diseases there. But there seem to be financial limitations thataway.

That it is instead used for horses and other money animals in US and other money countries, I guess a fella needs to accept that.

But if it is also pointlessly (over) dosed in US COVIDians, and hospitals need to deal with that as well as everything else? I mean, dang.

“[The antibody] appears to neutralize all … coronaviruses that cause respiratory infections in mammals.”
Like cancer, the common cold isn't just one disease, it is hundreds of different diseases.

'Mild' coronaviruses -- four of them -- cause (coarsely, depending on who is counting) 20% of all common colds. So this antibody could conceivably address that 20-ish%.

The other common colds are caused by several other known families of viruses (a couple hundred specific viruses), plus a significant block of still unidentified causes.

(Above slightly re-worded after some replies below.)

"The common cold is somewhat like cancer..."

As much as I love ya, I don't love that. Many-source 'colds' are only viruses sneaking into the respiratory playground. Cancer writ large is disruption of (human-) cell-replication controls, with certainly chemical and possibly microbial instigators.

If you are asserting nothing more than many-ness, then I have over reacted here.

The many-ness was the only point to that analogy.

A very sad note. Earlier this week, Seattle Children's Hospital acknowledged that it recently had its first patient death from covid-19. Based on various local reports, it seemed to be the very first pediatric death from covid-19 in our region. For patient privacy, no additional information was released.

Today we heard from a very long time friend, seen only very infrequently in recent years, but the spouse keeps in contact.

That aforementioned covid-19 death was his kid.

My 'like' was sympathy for sharing.

I wasn't distracted by the 'cancer' miswording. Sure some virus can trigger a cancer but so too can other environmental exposures. Attacking the lungs is the faster acting and spreadable risk.

Huh. I got it in late August because it was offered as a double-feature with my second Shingrix, and I just didn't think more about it.

    Well, we'll see....
