Transaxle codes

    My daughter's 2005 Prius recently started not going into ready mode and throwing the red triangle and the (!) And showing problem on the top of the multifunction board. The only way to start it is to disconnect the cables from the positive side of the 12 volt battery and wait a few minutes then reconnect. Car will start and drive until lights come on again, but after stopping will not start again with same" problem" coming up on multi-funtion display.
    Took the car to my mechanic at Hybrid Shop here in Puerto Rico and they checked it saying the codes pointed to a problem with the Transaxel. Codes : P0AA6, sub codes 527 613. He also said they pulled a little of the Transaxel fluid and found traces of metal in it. As he knows I am a DIY he recommended draining, flushing and replacing the fluid first to see if a sensor is picking up the metal traces and shutting the car down to protect itself. If that doesn't work next is to replace Transaxel with used one which can be purchased for about 300 .00 here and either install it my self and saving like 1000.00 or let him do it. He did not charge me for the analysis which I will attach here. Just want to know if anyone else has had this type of experience and could verify what they did. The car seems to run fine when I reset it with no problems that I feel or here from the Trans even when the lights come on, but I don't want to spend 1500 to 2000 replacing this at a shop and just wondering what is the best thing to do.     FYI, the advanced search feature is working and quite useful. You can narrow a search to a forum or subforum.
    Sounds like a high voltage leak, before R+R'ing the transmission, check the traction battery for tell tale signs.

    Thank you very much this is very usefull and I will start here but also check the fluid for metal. I advance search and found the thread of the complete change out of the Transaxel but u here no noise and car runs great so I thinking something is leaking in the battery area and will use your checks and diagnostics to troubleshoot before going the used Transaxel rout. Wi keep you updated. I did find this on you tube about the P0AA6 code with the 526,(not 527 which was my error it is 426) and the 612 subcode..

    It is refreshing to read a story where the auto tech seems to be right on the money. I'd keep that workshop. He is correct when he says that the 613 sub-code directs your attention to the transaxle.

    The 612 points you to the battery, but you have a 613 which points you to the transaxle.

    It is easier to get to the battery and open it up, so it is not a bad idea if that appeals to you to 100% eliminate a HV battery leak.

    SFO, your diagram is not quite accurate – the transaxle (pink) shading extends down too far and over the A/C system.

    It should look like this:

    Thank you both again for the info. I am a bit dyslexic and keep changing the codes when I'm typing or I just have big thumbs. I will check both and if I have to will change the Transaxel myself with the help from two threads found, but first I will drain, check for metal and refill as I do not hear any noise from my Transaxel at this point, but it could mean it is about to happen. Thanks for clarifying the diagram. The one she uses in the video has no colors but I understand the colors better. I just don't understand how a high voltage leak could be coming from the Transaxel. Can anyone explain that? Thanks again to you both.

    I reached out to [email protected] from the video and this is what I got back as they a d Luscious Garage San Francisco have had a lot of experience whit this . This explains the 526 613 very clearly. I hope this helps for future reference. Apparently the 2001 and 2002 and 2010 and beyond do not shut you out from ready light and you can still drive the car. Only the Generation 2 has a shut down and only way you can drive is do a battery disconnect and reset. They even mention a cab driver who put disconect switch I. The back of his car so he could quickly get back on the road. I may do this and use the car sparingly for close drives and use other parts for my 4 other Prius gen 2. Anybody have other options, let me know. The cost of importing a Transaxel from anywhere in the states to Puerto Rico is high because of the weight. So I hope this information helps anyone else I.     Hi! I would first make sure your 12v battery is in good shape, second I would start buy changing the fluid in the transaxle, since the transaxle is a simple set of electric motors and windings, the metal in the fluid could be throwing off the electronics in the transaxle. Plus it’s easy and cheap to do. Wishing you the best with your Prii! My first Prius I owned is still running without any major issues at 335k.


    Side note, I’m coming to PR for 4 days in February, I’m so excited! Such a beautiful place :)

    Thanks , I am going to do both, today the car started and worked fine throwing no codes. I did not go far, just testing but I am going to work on both battery and change fluid. Call me when you get here 787-460-4194. I drive Uber in my 2015 Prius so I'm always around.
