Prime 2017 max speed?

I think I’d worry about the tires before the car maxing out.

 

I suspect the max speed is much higher than my ability to safely drive a car. I certainly have hit >90mph on very rare occasions on the interstate in the past, but anything above that I would be risking my and others' lives. Not worth testing it.

 

103 mph... witnessed firsthand.

 

Aren't they all limited at 112/113 mph?
Just about all Toyota hybrids here in Europe are limited to 180 km/h.

Ummm... if you're interested in speed, are you sure you bought the right car? Just sayin'.

Perhaps I'm an old fart, as I also own a Mercedes SL and Mercedes Coupe but have no desire to push either to 100 (in any event they are electronically limited to ~149 mph in keeping with their Z tire rating).

Is that 180 km/h as displayed on the speedometer, or internally as read via the OBDII port, or on a GPS?

Considering that the speedometer has an intentional offset or bias, and that European and North American speedometers are often biased differently, this makes a difference.

 

As mentioned in the specifications by Toyota. On the speedometer it goes past 180.

 

I got curious and allegedly saw 100 on the gps. allegedly.

 

116mph and you can leave it there all day. Engine temps go up to 205F in 90F weather. Economy goes down to round 28mpg

 

I'm not sure what car you're referring to, but it's pretty surely not a 2017-2022 Prius Prime. It accelerates well to 104mph indicated, then acts like you had set the cruise control to 104. One time I saw 105 for under 1 second. As for mpg, here is my experience: 61mpg@61mph; 42mpg@84mph; 32mpg@96mph; 26mpg@104mph. Obviously very dependent upon weather, wind, tire inflation, etc. I run 50psi at all 4 corners, on 51psi max tires which are also XL 99T and winter rated. Yes, snow/ice tires rated for 118mph while carrying the weight of a minivan, on a Prius Prime run at high speed in hot western states in summer, while beating EPA mpg at normal speeds.

So, my own observations are quite close to those of John1701a who says he witnessed 103 as the limit, though I've personally never failed to accelerate right past 103 and have it level off at 104 indicated. Same result with different sized tires, also. Some where actual speed was lower than the 104 indicated, one where actual speed was higher than the 104 indicated.

 

Every Prius and Prius Prime through at least 2022 came with tires with a very normal S speed rating, meaning they're fine to 112mph if properly inflated. Personally, I'd never do a speed run with tires at less than 42psi, and preferably right up near the "max psi at max load" pressure. I don't buy tires for a Prius or Prius Prime where that max pressure is anything but 50-51 psi. Then I run them at 50psi (cold), though for anyone used to driving on squishy tires at 35psi, you might want to work up to that as you learn to drive a car that isn't grossly understeering.

 

That's not something I would like to test here. That would be called reckless driving with an hefty fine, more demerit points than what a clean permit is allowed to have, a permit suspension (obviously) and an on the spot impound vehicle. Now cause an accident because of this and it's jail time (if you're out of it alive).

 

You must have experienced less de-policing up there than we have down here over the past four years.

 

There have been crackdowns lately and many got caught.

 

I remember reading somewhere that the maximum speed under battery power only is 85 MPG. Is that correct?
