Finally put some roof brackets on and a roof box. Everything went awesome. At 65-70mph it held 40+ mpg when you get moving closer to 80mph the mpg drop to 35mph or so. Car drove fine. If you can get behind a truck it really is smooth and mpg are close to normal but this isn't safe and is never recommended. Universal cheap racks work fine fwiw. Also of you use straps get something to twist down around the strap where it goes from the roof to car because they will sound like a bee buzzing otherwise. A little tie wire or zip tie so they can't flap from air and you won't hear anything from the straps. I sure love this car, I've had it 6 years and put 100k miles on it, got it at about 40k miles in 2015. 2013 Prius 2. Only repair so far since I owned it one set of pads and rotors. Otherwise only fluids and filters.
Nifty! If you twist the flat tie down straps, they won't whitle. First time I tied my kayak to my van and drove it, it was wild! I learned that trick about 50 years ago from someone, I just don't remember. I had forgotten. After kayaking, I rememberd it and twisted them once. No more whitle!
An update I returned the junk amazon cheap universal racks and got some Thule generic universals off market place for $40 I'm glad I did they are much stronger came with ski clamps and functionally are ten times better
I remember having a roof rack similar and with a basket my mpg tanked! These days the hit isn't as drastic with the low profile roof rack.
